Who is Anthony Kennedy? (Kate answered Souter)

Kate 5200 – 5000 = 200 ($10,000)
Jonathan 8800 + 6000 = 14800 ($14,800)
Louie 18000 + 399 = 18399 ($50,000)

To be honest, if I were told that two of the three people here got this clue, I would have predicted Kate and Jonathan, not Jonathan and Louie!

Some more fun facts about the Supreme Court:

  • Anthony Kennedy is the only current Supreme Court Justice whose confirmation vote did not have a dissenting vote (it was 97-0). Clarence Thomas was confirmed by the very slim margin of 52-48. Every justice from David Souter forward has had at least one dissenting vote when being confirmed to the Court.
  • The 8 current justices, in order of tenure (first date on the Court in parentheses):
    1. Anthony Kennedy (February 18, 1988)
    2. Clarence Thomas (October 23, 1991)
    3. Ruth Bader Ginsburg (August 10, 1993)
    4. Stephen Breyer (August 3, 1994)
    5. John Roberts (September 29, 2005)
    6. Samuel Alito (January 31, 2006)
    7. Sonia Sotomayor (August 8, 2009)
    8. Elena Kagan (August 7, 2010)
  • Interestingly, in spite of the fact that the majority of historical judges have been Protestant, the Supreme Court currently is comprised of 5 Catholic judges and 3 Jewish ones. (If Merrick Garland gets confirmed, he would be a fourth Jewish judge on the Court.)

    For the record:

Louis CK was introduced on the show using the above “Louie”.

Another fun SCOTUS fact: Kennedy is one of two Justices to be the third nominee to fill the vacancy he now occupies – following Lewis Powell’s retirement, Robert Bork was rejected and Douglas Ginsburg had to withdraw.

The other? Samuel Alito. John Roberts was originally nominated to fill Sandra Day O’Connor’s seat, but that nomination was withdrawn and Roberts was submitted for Chief Justice after William Rehnquist’s death. Then came the whole Harriet Miers fiasco before Alito was nominated and confirmed.
