Here’s tonight’s Final Jeopardy answer and question for Thursday, December 29, 2016:
Final Jeopardy! category: COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD
Final Jeopardy! clue/answer: Of the 5 countries with the lowest population density, this UN member is the only one named for a desert
(correct response beneath the contestants)
|Nathalie Szilagyi, a physician from Meriden, Connecticut
||Mukund Marathe, a music teacher & singer from Montclair, New Jersey
||Justin Scace, a writer & editor from East Lyme, Connecticut (1-day total: $14,400)
What is Namibia?
Namibia, of course, is named after southwest Africa’s Namib Desert, which runs along its coast. The Kalahari Desert is located in its east. According to the CIA World Factbook, Namibia is the first country in the world to incorporate environmental protection into its constitution, with nearly the entire Namib Desert being protected land.
With only 2.1 million people over nearly 319,000 square miles, Namibia is the second-least densely populated full UN member, after Mongolia. Iceland sits third, followed by Suriname and Mauritania. Canada is 8th.
Of course, “UN member” certainly disqualifies the disputed African territory known as Western Sahara.
