Lucas: The good seed

With unabashed joy I announce that Lucas Peterson will be appearing on Jeopardy! November 26th. Lucas was a contestant the day I taped Jeopardy! in December last year, but he was extra and was to come back another time. I’ll never forget the look on his face when the last two contestants were called and he wasn’t one of them. Anyway Lucas impressed me because he bothered to track me down (I guess through the blog) and e-mailed me the very day I lost. (That is, the day I taped, not the day my episode aired.) I saw Lucas online a few weeks ago and teased him, I keep looking for your name in the hometown howdies! That’s when he told me his airdate. So vamos, Lucas.

One Coryat to report, from the episode originally airing 6-5-12: 32200 (34400 without negs). The first time I played, my score was 26600!
Today’s contestants, from day 4 of the Teachers Tournament quarterfinals:

Marcia Edmundson of Chesterfield VA
Tina Baybay-Bykov of Orlando FL
(Do you think Mr. Trebek gave her name an extra syllable in her interview?)
Brenton Montie of South Lyon MI
When I laid eyes on Brenton I expected Mr. Trebek to comment on his youthful appearance. Anyone else?
Marcia found the Daily Double in the round in Brush Up Your Shakespeare. She’d gotten 5 right and had 1800. Tina had gotten one right and had 200, while Brenton had gotten 3 right and one wrong and had 1400. This was the last clue before the first break, but Marcia wagered just 500 on this clue, which I’ll admit was a toughie: “It’s the last word spoken by Richard III.” I’ll put it on the poll. Anyway Marcia guessed “adieu,” and I guessed “goodbye”! 🙂
At the first break, Tina had 2000. She’d gotten 4 right since Marcia’s Daily Double/the first break. Marcia had 5100 and had gotten 6 right and one wrong. Brenton had gotten 4 right and one wrong, and had 3400.
Marcia found the next Daily Double too, in Two’s Day. She’d gotten 5 right in the round and had 10700. Tina I think had gotten 3 right and one wrong, and had 6000. (If you read below you’ll know why I was a little jumbled up!) Brenton had gotten 3 right and had 5800. Marcia wagered 2000 on this clue: “83, odd; 937, odd…I guess 2 really is the only even one of these.” Did you think it strange that Marcia said she doesn’t like numbers, when wasn’t she introduced as a former banker?! And her students know this? Sad. Anyway she got it right.
I don’t know about you but I thought Marcia was skipping her chance at the next Daily Double when she suddenly went from Hump Day to Weak End. But no, the Daily Double was in the latter, and Brenton found it. He had gotten 2 right since Marcia’s last Daily Double, and had 7000. Marcia had gotten 3 right and had 15100. Tina had gotten one right and had 8000. Brenton wagered 3000 on this clue: “Slate called the last scene of this 2007 Oscar winner based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel ‘a tacked on chunk of meaning.'” Oh boy oh boy oh boy. But see, I thought the ending sucked, too! Luckily I nailed this one, and so did Brenton. Then Brenton kept on nailing ’em, getting 4 more right and ending the round with 17200. Tina had gotten one wrong and had 6000.
The Final Jeopardy category was National Songs. This was the clue: “First publicly performed in 1745,this song sometimes has its pronouns changed.” In my opinion, this is a cruddy clue. I got it right but was sure it was wrong. Pronouns?! Anyway Tina missed it and lost 5000. (Why didn’t she just wager the whole thing, then?) Marcia got it right and seemed to know it. She gained 5000. Brenton got it too and added 4000, making him the winner.
     I got these triple-stumpers today: (I counted 11 total.)

  • In “P” as in Fashion: “Dr. Denton Sleepers & (oo la la) French Maid Sleepers are types of these.” (Okay for real, people, how was this a triple-stumper?!)
  • In Fry Day: “This Pennsylvania Dutch pastry is named for what the batter is dripped through before it’s fried.”
  • In Two’s Day: “This numeration system that works with base 2, not 10, renders the number 2 to look like 10.”
I didn’t get this triple-stumper in Fry Day, but I want it on the poll too: “A classic Passover breakfast is this dish, matzoh that’s been soaked in water, dipped in egg & fried like French toast.” Also be ready for these three on the poll, in Thor’s Day:
  • “O gods, rain fire on Marvel & Paramount for making this slimy god Thor’s brother.”
  • “Brok & Sindri, members of this race, made many magic objects for Norse gods, including Thor’s hammer.”
  • “This was the name of Thor’s hammer, which could return like a boomerang.”
And look for this one on the poll, in “Mon”day: “A title for U.S. investors have over $2.7 trillion inthese safe but not sexy funds.” And this one in Weak End: “The Washington Post said the end of this Spielberg film about a robotic boy would bring ‘legendary befuddlement.'” And by the way, just because I’m including them on the poll doesn’t mean I missed them!

My Coryat today was 24200; 28200 without 2 negs. 🙁
