Long-Running Champs Always Grow On Me

Andy here with the recap of Drew Horwood going for Win #6!

Barrett Evans and Tish Koch (pronounced Cook) are the challengers for Drew today!

J! round categories:
THE QUOTABLE MARK TWAIN
ON THE GEOGRAPHIC MENU
TAKE ME OUT TO THE BASEBALL MOVIE
LET US GO FOURTH
HOW ODD
“Y U” LITTLE…

Barrett got off to the hot start, going 4/5 in HOW ODD, and held an early lead after 15 clues! The scores after MENU, ODD, and FOURTH were:

Barrett $4,200
Tish $1,400
Drew $1,400

One of Jimmy’s clues in the opening 15 made reference to the Raffles Hotel. One thing for keep in mind: Raffles = Singapore!

During the interviews, Alex gave Drew the advice of “don’t use all of the money to pay off student loans – use some of it to have a good time!”

It was Tish who found the Daily Double, under THE QUOTABLE MARK TWAIN $400. The scores were:

Barrett $7,800
Drew $3,800
Tish $1,600

Tish bet $1600. Her clue: “I came in with” this “in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it”, Twain said in 1909; he did. Her incorrect response put her down to $0.

By the end of the round, the scores were:

Barrett $8,000
Drew $4,800
Tish $-600

DJ! round categories:
HE WAS PRESIDENT WHEN…
2 TONES
ITALIAN SCIENTISTS
DEVILISH EXPRESSIONS
MEDALS & DECORATIONS
THE “E” READER

It was Drew who played the first Daily Double, under MEDALS & DECORATIONS $1600, on the 9th clue of the round. The scores were:

Barrett $10,000
Drew $6,400
Tish $2,200

Drew knew what he had to do here, and he did it: the True Daily Double. His clue: The Order of Giron Beach, created by Fidel Castro, is named for an area along this bay. His immediate response doubled his score!

Tish got a chance to redeem herself on the final Daily Double, under ITALIAN SCIENTISTS $1200. She’d hit the first two in the category, and the scores were:

Drew $12,800
Barrett $10,000
Tish $3,400

Tish needed another True Daily Double here to give herself any sort of hope of winning. However, she bet just $400. I can think of at least a hundred people who just threw remotes or other items at their TV screens over that bet. Her clue: Ascanio Sobrero created this liquid in the 1840s & realized he’d made an “explosive” discovery. Tish gave a correct response this time, and found her score moving up to just $3,800. Sigh.

Drew got 7 of the final 12 clues by himself, to just 1 for Barrett, to put in excellent shape going into Final!

Scores going into Final Jeopardy!:
Drew $22,400
Barrett $14,400
Tish $5,000

FJ! category: HISTORICAL RELATIVES

FJ! clue: This king was the first of Henry VIII’s many fathers-in-law

Tish 5000 – 5000 = 0
Barrett 14400 – 14400 = 0
Drew 22400 + 6401 = 28801

Drew’s now a 6-time champ, with $107,998 in winnings!

I’ll be honest: I really think Drew is winning these games because his strategies are that much better than his opponent’s are! Didn’t think I’d be saying that after his Daily Double wagers early on in his run, but he does know how to play the game!

ToC update:

1. Drew Horwood $107,998 (6 wins)
2. Joshua Brakhage $103,205 (5 wins)
3. Sara Garnett $75,403 (3 wins)

Game #7 for Drew will be Jeanie’s recap! I’ll be back next week!
