Andy here with a recap of May 31!
Kirk Nelson and Benjamin Recchie are the challengers from Sam Hopkins; will Sam get onto the ToC standings?
J! round categories:
LEGAL MATTERS
THE BIBLE BOOK IMMEDIATELY BEFORE
PUNCTUATION EQUIVOCATION?
THE MOVIE MAP
THINGS & STUFF
THE VIETNAM WAR
The first Daily Double was a (ugh!) video clue on the 3rd clue of the game (VIETNAM WAR $600), and Sam got to play it! The scores were:
Sam $400
Kirk $200
Benjamin $0
Sam bet $1,000. His clue: Only a small part of hanoi’s infamous Hoa La Prison remains standing today. During the war, inmates such as John McCain gave it this ironic nickname, reflecting the lack of hospitality they found there. Sam’s correct response put him at $1400.
Coming out of the Daily Double, we only got to 12 clues before the first break (thanks to the video clues for that one), and we only got through 26 before the round ended! Scores at the end of the J! Round:
Sam $6,400
Benjamin $3,800
Kirk $1,800
DJ! round categories:
SMALLER THAN TULSA
BERRIES
WORLD SERIES MVPs BY POSITION
ADD AN E
CODA
CHROME
SMALLER THAN TULSA was a fun category; they were about countries smaller than Tulsa, OK! The Daily Double was Sam’s at the bottom of that category, after WORLD SERIES MVPs was played as well! Scores were:
Sam $10,000
Kirk $7,800
Benjamin $4,200
Sam bet $5,000. His clue: In 1530 the Holy Roman Emperor gave it to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem as a base against the Turks. Sam went for Crete and his score was halved.
The other Daily Double went to Kirk (BERRIES $1600) midway through the round. Scores:
Kirk $9,800
Sam $5,800
Benjamin $5,400
Kirk bet $2,000. His clue: This berry is known as framboos by the Dutch. An immediate correct response put Kirk at $11,800.
Throughout the rest of the round, there seemed to be a lot of negs keeping Benjamin’s score down! Benjamin’s getting the final clue sealed Kirk’s lock game on Sam; the scores were:
Kirk $18,200
Sam $9,000
Benjamin $9,000
FJ! category: CLASSIC NOVELS
FJ! clue: In his will, this title guy tells his niece Antonia she should marry a man who knows not “about…chivalry”
Sam 9000 + 4500 = 13500
Benjamin 9000 – 8994 = 6
Kirk 18200 – 0 = 18200
We’ll be back next week with five more recaps!
