Two recent season 25 Coryats!
originally 2-4-09: 26800 (32600 without negs) 🙁
originally 2-5-09: 20200 (25800 without negs) 🙁
Remember when I said Hans von Walter was going to appear on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? This good news for many but bad for me: It aired today, I saw on the boards. 🙁 And I missed it. 🙁 🙁 And I don’t get Millionaire here anyway. 🙁 🙁 🙁 And I didn’t warn you in time. I had it on my mind but somehow thought I’d know in time. Anyway if you saw it I’d love to read your comments. Tell me how it went, okay?
On a happy note, it appears that I get weekend reruns now. To think a friend had to tell me that Jeopardy! had been on at 5:00 p.m. a few times, so I searched by title, and sure enough. For you this just means I’ll get those Coryats up in a more timely fashion, but I don’t think anyone’s comparing.
I only went to the boards at all to see how much Keith Whitener has won over 2 days. I need only have looked here anyway, as Andy does a much better job than I do of saying how much contestants have won. Anyway, with a 2-day total of 51200, if Keith wins today I’m highly likely to update the ToC list. Shall we?

Not only was this first clue a triple-stumper, all three contestants negged on it. (I said what Keith did and was pretty confident about it.) In Navy: “Students at the Naval Academy have this rank.” Keith went to Mikhails, but Meredith went right back to Navy, where I negged again on a triple-stumper. This time no one rang in: “For Navy personnel, this decoration for heroism is second only to the Medal of Honor.”
I haven’t seen anyone complain about how pokey Keith is choosing clues, but it gets to me a little bit. He found the first Daily Double before the first break, in Mikhails. He had gotten 6 right and 2 wrong, and had 2400. Tori had gotten 3 right and the one wrong, and had 1200. Meredith had gotten one right and 2 wrong, and was in the hole 1000. Keith wagered just 400 on this softball: “In 2005, after disbanding his White Oak Dance Project, he established an arts center in New York City.” Keith acted like he just threw a name out there, but I ask you, who else could it have been? He was bound to come up eventually, and we’d already seen “Gorbachev” and the more difficult, in my opinion, “AK-47.” This was the last clue before the break. We’d seen 14 clues, but it didn’t feel like that many.
I looked for Meredith for a Q & A but the e-mail address I found was no longer valid. I looked for Keith too but the one I found was not him. I hope I have better luck next week finding people! Anyway, if I had found Meredith I’d have asked for more information about her anecdote. (A stuffed frog traveling the world with her?) What did you guys think of it? Maybe it’s a good luck frog – She immediately swept Remembering Ernest Borgnine. I was hoping to see a “Poseidon Adventure” clue in that category, as that is the first and best place that I know him. I closed my eyes trying to come up with the correct response to this one, and was surprised to hear the video clue:
One of these days I’m gonna tip over trying to film a video clue. I’m surprised it wasn’t this unlucky day.
I got this triple-stumper in Exit Through the Gift Shop:
There were 7 clues left when Mr. Trebek gave the less-than-a-minute warning. Huh, gee, imagine, 3 were left covered. So Keith had gotten 4 right since his Daily Double/the first break, and had 5800. Tori had gotten one right and the neg you saw in the video, and had 1000. Meredith had gotten 6 right and the neg, for 1800.
Did you guys think Mr. Trebek was going to say “Correct” when he said the “C” in the correct response of this clue? In 100 Years Ago: 1912: “The United Kingdom established the forerunner to the R.A.F. — the R.F.C., short for this.”
Keith found the first Daily Double of the round, in Geographic Nicknames. He’d gotten 3 right and one wrong in the round, and had 6600. Tori had gotten one right and 2 wrong and had 200. Meredith had gotten 3 right and had 4600. This time Keith wagered 2000 on this, another sitter: “Sicily’s ‘Mountain of Fire.'”
A few days ago I said in a comment I was disappointed I didn’t sweep Which Word is Mizpeled? Today I wanted to sweep Beauty Queens and didn’t.
Meredith found the next Daily Double, in Thanks for the Title, Shakespeare. Mr. Trebek pointed out that there were 2 clues left, and I point out that we had not gotten a time-running-out warning yet. Meredith had gotten 3 right but 2 wrong since Keith’s Daily Double, and had 6200. Tori had done the same, and had 3000. Keith had gotten 7 right, and so had 16600. Sort of a sticky spot for Meredith, wagering-wise. I might’ve wagered all or most of it. She wagered 3200 on this clue: “Steinbeck didn’t have to read much of ‘Richard III’ to get the title of this 1961 novel.” She got it right!
One of the two remaining clues was a triple-stumper that no one tried, and the other one Keith got. So he ended the round with 17000, Tori had 3000, and Meredith had 9400. The Final Jeopardy category was 21st Century Games. This was the clue: “The villains in this game were inspired by the swine flu epidemic scare.” Mr. Trebek, as usual, especially lately, seemed eager to say he’s not into anything that smacks of technology. I got this right even though I could not tell you anything (til now) about the correct response. All three contestants got it wrong. Tori lost 1 dollar. Meredith lost everything!! And Keith lost just 1801. So yes, I am updating the ToC list today:
