After McGovern’s death in 2012, TIME republished some photographs of McGovern on the 1972 campaign trail.

Interestingly, the “Dakota Queen” was actually named for McGovern’s wife Eleanor, whom he married in 1943 (they stayed married 64 years until her 2007 death).
