Alex Trebek is coming home.
The Jeopardy! Fan has learned that for the first time in Jeopardy!’s 32-season history in syndication, it will be taping episodes in Canada for the start of next season. Additionally, as an olive branch for those who had difficulty taking the last round of online testing, the shows will consist entirely of Canadian contestants.
27 Canadian contestants will be picked to appear in these special episodes, and a special round of in-person testing will be utilized to ensure that the show does not run afoul of any national anti-spam legislation.
“Because of the recent difficulties we had with allowing Canadians to take the most recent round of online testing, we felt we needed to make things up to Canada somehow. Additionally, with Alex Trebek being Canadian, it seemed perfect,” said a show publicist.
It has yet to be determined whether the shows will tape in Toronto or Vancouver; an announcement as to tickets will be forthcoming.
Of course, in ultimate Canadian fashion, it does mean that the show, for this tournament only, will be returning to its original dollar values: $100 through $500 in the Jeopardy! round, and $200 through $1000 in Double Jeopardy. Because Canada.
However, it does mean that for the first time since 2001, a contestant would be able to say “I’ll take APRIL FOOLS for $500, please, Alex.”
