Jeanie: I thought “West Side Story” was a good guess, and you looked like you thought it was right.
Stephanie: I really wasn’t all that confident in my answer! It was a guess based on the fact that, based on my memories, “West Side Story” opens in the early morning hours. I don’t know NYC geography that well. 🙂 My face upon finding out I was wrong was me holding back on saying “SHIT!” I worked with truck drivers for four years and I’ve worked with mechanics for three. I’ve picked up some bad habits that I should probably work on before having kids. 🙂
Jeanie: Since you are both Presbyterian ministers, did you and Collin talk about that?
Stephanie: Yes, Collin and I spoke quite a bit. When waiting for the shuttle to take us to the studio, I saw the logo on his sweater. I’m a deacon (not a minister) and briefly attended seminary before running away screaming (mostly due to the school I attended). So, we had quite a bit to talk about, and told a few Presbyterian jokes.
Jeanie: Will you tell us about your Howdy, since it doesn’t appear on J!’s YouTube site yet? [They’ve since been posted.]
Stephanie: My howdy was “Hey Baltimore, take a break from cracking your crabs and watch me on Jeopardy!” Had it been up to me, I would have talked about the Ravens or the Orioles. However, several other contestants were talking about local sports teams, so they wanted to change it up.
Jeanie: I’m always curious how many times contestants have taken the test. I’d also like to know whether you stayed to watch the rest of the episodes that day…? Did you tape on a Tuesday or a Wednesday?
Stephanie: I got through on my first time taking the test. My now-husband had been on me from the first time we watched Jeopardy! together to try out for the show. I always had too many other things going on to really pursue it, but after our wedding, I realized it was the right time to do it. We’re planning to start a family in a couple of years, so I knew if I wanted to do it, I had to do it now. I auditioned in NYC (the closest audition to Baltimore and an easy train ride away), and found out a month later I had been selected.
I stayed for the two episodes following mine, and my husband and I left when they broke for lunch. We even gave Matt Volk and his wife a ride back to the hotel. (Competing against each other is absolutely nothing personal!) I had gone in on Tuesday, but ended up not being selected that day. I had been silently hoping I wouldn’t be, since I did not want to go against Jared. Neal Pollack (who was also in the Tuesday group) and I said that we needed to buy Matt a drink for knocking Jared out. 🙂 I ended up taping first thing on Wednesday.
Jeanie: Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Stephanie: I have been asked why I wagered so conservatively on the Daily Double. My knowledge of modern Broadway is very limited. I took a class in college about accompanying musical theater and learned a lot about the history of Broadway, but we really only went as far as the 70’s. I’m not much of a fan of live theater, and I was convinced I was going to be asked a question about some show I had never heard of. Of course, I was asked about Motown, which I love! Isn’t that the way it always works?
Jeopardy! was an absolutely amazing experience, and I made so many friends in the process. To be one of 400 on the show out of 100,000 who took the online test is something to be proud of, no matter how I finished.
