Andy here with the final recap of the week!

Today’s contestants:

Will Carlos win the all-important fourth game?

J! Round categories:
“B” WHERE?
METALS
YOU’VE GOT TASTE
A FASHION STATEMENT
CHIPS
THE GRAMMY: BEST MALE POP VOCAL

A rare opening segment that had 16 clues instead of 15; all 3 players had good luck on the buzzer! Scores at the end of the first break (after we played “B” WHERE, METALS, GRAMMYs, and TASTE $200):

Carlos $4,000 (7 right)
Craig $2,200 (5 right)
Franke $2,000 (3 right)

Carlos has run an anime review site for the last 15 years!

The Daily Double finally came out at A FASHION STATEMENT $800, and it was Carlos’! Scores:

Carlos $5,400
Craig $3,000
Franke $2,800

Carlos bet $1,200. His clue: An outer garment & a weapon combine to give us this phrase meaning dealing in espionage & intrigue. His correct response put him at $6,600!

By the end of 30, the scores were:
Carlos $7,600 (13 right, 1 wrong)
Craig $4,800 (10 right, 1 wrong)
Franke $2,800 (4 right, 1 wrong)

DJ! categories:
19TH CENTURY NOTABLES
PARTS OF THE CITY
MOVIE PEOPLE
RUSSIAN PLAYWRIGHTS
GREEK GOD OUT, ROMAN GOD IN
TRIPLE H

Both Carlos and Craig got tripped up by the Modest on the following (Russian playwrights $1200: The libretto for this composer’s 1890 opera “The Queen of Spades” is by his playwright brother Modest”. It was the only one Craig missed in that category, though! Following that, he went and ran MOVIE PEOPLE to take a commanding lead! By the time the dust had settled, Craig had rung in first on the first 17 clues of the round (15 right, 2 wrong). That’s a buzzer performance that I haven’t seen since Ken Jennings!

However, it was Carlos who got to play the first Daily Double in the round (19TH CENTURY NOTABLES $2000). Scores were:

Craig $18,400
Carlos $5,600
Franke $2,000

Carlos bet $5,000. His clue: In 1890 this painter of the American west illustrated an edition of Longfellow’s “Song of Hiawatha”. Carlos managed to pull the correct response and went up to $10,600!

Craig got the 4 straight clues following this, though, and then found the final Daily Double under PARTS OF THE CITY $1600! Scores:

Craig $23,200
Carlos $10,600
Franke $2,000

Craig bet $2,000. His clue: This Spanish word for “neighborhood” refers to a Latino enclave in a U.S. City. I didn’t know this either, and Craig had no answer! His score fell to $21,200.

Scores going into Final:
Craig $22,000 (20 right, 3 wrong)
Carlos $8,600 (2 right, 3 wrong)
Franke $2,000 (1 right, 1 wrong)

FJ! category: HISTORIC LETTERS

FJ! clue: In April 1865 she wrote to Mary Lincoln, “I cannot remain silent…brokenhearted by the loss of my own beloved husband”

Franke 2000 – 0 = 2000
Carlos 8600 – 8599 = 1
Craig 22000 – 3000 = 19000

None of the contestants were able to even hazard much of a guess! I got this Final; I assume it was because I’m more familiar with British monarchs than the average person.

If this wasn’t Friday, I’d bet good money on a long run for Craig. Will he be able to keep up his buzzer mojo on Monday, though? See you then!
