I swept Authors’ Former Jobs, including these two triple-stumpers:
“The man behind Sam Spade, he worked for 8 years as a detective for the Pinkerton Agency.” And Mike and Jen negged on it! There was a very similar clue in yesterday’s GSN rerun, but I got it right then too.
- “While working as a busboy at a Washington hotel, this Harlem Renaissance poet was discovered by Vachel Lindsay.”
Mr. Trebek rhymed “Vachel” with “Rachel.” I’d have rhymed it with “cockle.” (I wasn’t sure that was a word til just now.)
The next clue was the Daily Double, in the same category. It was Jen’s. She’d gotten 4 right but 2 wrong and was 200 in the hole. Mike had gotten one right and one wrong and had 200. Susan had gotten one right and had 400. Unlike Jeannie yesterday, Jen wagered all she could, 1000, on this clue: “This novelist served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1984 to 1990.” Jen and I got it right.
I noted Susan’s pronunciation of the correct response on this clue in News of the 20-Tweens: “In December 2010 Paypal, Visa & Mastercard stopped processing donations to this anti-secrecy website.” My sister and I have an ongoing debate about how to pronounce that prefix: with a long “e” or with a schwa sound on the second “i”?
I knew the correct response here but not exactly, so there was no way I was going to try it! In News of the 20-Tweens: “In June 2012 she arrived in Oslo 21 years late to pick up her Nobel Peace Prize.” I might put this one on the poll if I do one. Susan got it right. This was the last clue before the break. Susan had gotten 3 right since Jen’s Daily Double and had 2000. Jen had gotten one more right and one wrong and had 600. Mike still had 200.
I think it’s pretty cool that Jen is a Trekkie!
Doesn’t this just sound sick to you? (in You “R” What You Eat): “In the French dish Lapin a la Moutarde, this meat is served in a mustard sauce.”
I’ve never heard of the correct response in this clue to mean the second half of it, in Also a Gun Part: “To run like lightning, or to eat a meal in a hurry.” And I didn’t know it was a part of a gun, but I went 1/5 in the category.
Two clues were left covered this round, in Webcams. I think it’s because Mr. Trebek dragged out Mike’s and Susan’s contestant interviews. Also, Susan tends to say more than is necessary when selecting a clue. And is it just me or did she seem a little irritable today?
Mike finished the round with 2000. He’d gotten 2 right since the break. Jen had gotten 4 right and had 2400. Susan had gotten 4 right too, and had 4000.
Susan and Mike seesawed back and forth in the Double Jeopardy round, and were tied at 9200 when Susan found the first Daily Double in Birth of a Nation. She and Mike had each gotten 6 right. Jen had gotten one right and had 2800. Susan wagered 2000 on this clue: “This country: June 17, 1944, with Sveinn Bjornsson as its first president.” Susan and I got it right. I felt extra-good about myself because Mr. Trebek was so impressed: “Way to go! Terrific! Well done!” I would’ve said that to Susan after the Nobel Peace Prize clue! Too bad she didn’t wager more, because Mike tied the game again with the very next clue, worth 2000. The next clue was a triple-stumper I got, in Better 2-Letter: “It’s the 4th tone of a diatonic scale.” Okay, these guys have apparently seen “Ted” and “My Dinner with Andre,” but not “The Sound of Music”? The next clue was yet another triple-stumper I got, in the same category: “It’s the objective case of we.” Were the contestants asleep at this point? But I had no idea on this one Jen got, in the same category: “It’s a lightweight, 2-piece garment for martial artists.”
Like in the Jeopardy round, 2 clues were left covered in Double Jeopardy, this time in Old McDonald Had…. What wound up being the last clue was the other Daily Double, in that category. Mike found it. He’d gotten 3 right since Susan’s Daily Double, and had 14800. Susan had gotten 2 right and had 14000. Jen had gotten 4 right and had 7600. We knew time was running out because Mr. Trebek had given a warning with 5 clues left. Tough decision. What would you have wagered? Mike went with 3000 on this clue: “From 1952 to 1965 Pittsburgh-born David McDonald had the title president of the union of these workers.” Mike got it right!
Time for the Final. The category was Dog Breeds! Not exactly a wheelhouse for me. This was the clue: “Alphabetically, this breed is last on the recognized list of the American Kennel Club.” I was pretty surprised but I got this one right! Mr. Trebek said Jen wrote her response quickly. She was wrong though, and lost 7500. I’d have wagered 0: If Mike made the expected wager to cover Susan if she doubled, he’d wind up with 7599 if he got the Final wrong. Susan got it right and added 6000. I wonder what her rationale was. Mike got it right too, and wagered 11000. Plenty for the win. I like Mike. We’ll see him tomorrow!
Now, I’m told that a multi-time champ’s last-day winnings don’t count toward her chances at making the ToC. But look at yesterday’s list. See how tight the race is near Susan. She’d still fall below that line even if those winnings did count.
