Apologies for the Tuesday Morning Quarterback references. Hello, Jeopardy! fans! Andy here with the recap of the October 9 game! Today’s contestants:
Amanda Burton
Martha Warren
Stephanie Jass (1-day champion, $17,000)
J! round categories: THERE’S AN ANIMAL ON YOUR CAR, GENERAL FOOD, I’M GETTING EMOTIONAL HERE, LITERARY CROSSWORD CLUES “G”, LONDON CAN TAKE IT, GOIN’ COUNTRY
Stephanie really liked LITERARY CROSSWORD CLUES “G” and she found the Daily Double there very early on in the game. Scores:
Stephanie $1,400
Martha $400
Amanda $0
Stephanie wagered just $1,000; her clue was as follows: Beowulf’s monster (7). Her correct response put her to $2,400.
It was mostly Stephanie’s game over the first 15 clues; the scores at the first break:
Stephanie $4,200
Amanda $1,400
Martha $200
I came into the interviews expecting another amusing anecdote from Stephanie. I really wasn’t sure if she was going to emulate yesterday’s dryer coaster, and I came out of that rather disappointed! It was a boring story about Stephanie being an American history teacher! I did find Martha’s story about “meeting” Placido Domingo rather funny, though!
It seems as Stephanie really has her buzzer mojo down! Martha and Amanda were only able to get in sporadically throughout the round, with scores at the end of 30 at:
Stephanie $11,400
Amanda $2,200
Martha $1,600
DJ! round categories: OVER MY DEAD BODY, THE SECRET OF “NYM”, THE TONY AWARDS, SCIENCE & NATURE, STATE GEMS, GOIN’ COUNTRY
Unsurprisingly (although Martha did well for herself in THE TONY AWARDS), it was Stephanie who got to the round’s first Daily Double first, under OVER MY DEAD BODY $1200. Scores:
Stephanie $14,600
Martha $6,400
Amanda $2,600
Her bet was just $2,000 (I swear, she’s going to die by this sword at some point!) – and her clue: “Born Nov. 23, 1860 killed July 14, 1881 / The Boy Bandit King / He Died As He Had Lived”. Her correct response put her to $16,600!
I was hoping for Martha to get to the last Daily Double, just to keep things exciting! It felt as if Amanda was having trouble ringing in over the other two ladies, unfortunately. But she got in on a $2,000 clue and went back over to STATE GEMS, where the $1,600 clue saw the Daily Double. Amanda did not look happy at this development. Scores:
Stephanie $25,800
Martha $8,000
Amanda $4,600
Amanda bet just $2,000 (Gregg Easterbook would write ‘game over’ in his notebook right about now.)
Her clue: The state gemstone of Washington is this fossilized tree product. Really unsure of herself, Amanda hemmed, hawed, answered, and to her surprise, found that her answer was accepted! Score to $6,600.
Most of the last category belonged to Stephanie, leading to scores going into FJ! of:
Stephanie $28,200
Amanda $6,600
Martha $6,000
FJ! category: STORES
FJ! clue: These stores first launched in 2001 take in more money per square foot than any other U.S. retailer, almost doubling Tiffany’s
The large mass of people I always see in these stores in malls, even up in Canada, made this a massively easy question for me.
Martha 6000 – 6000 = 0
Amanda 6600 – 4000 = 2600
Stephanie 28200 + 23770 = 30570 (2-day total, $47,570)
Jeanie’s got tomorrow’s recap; I’ll be back soon!
