My Coryat for the weekend rerun, which originally aired 1-17-12, was 23600 (25800 without negs). The first time I played, my score was 20400.
Hopefully you caught Friday’s highly-entertaining episode in which Alan Baltis won for the first time with $2,199. Mr. Trebek said at the top of today’s episode, “$2,199. It…No, I don’t want to explain. You don’t want to know.” What does Alan have up his sleeve today? This week’s contestants look just as colorful as he does, on the Hometown Howdy page:
Katie Annis of Ashburn, VA
David Brown of Palo Alto, CA
Kim Carver of San Francisco, CA
Jared Hall of Austin, TX
Leigh Hoopes of Crescent City, KY
Sarah Orzalli of Chicago, IL
Bruce Richards of Metairie, LA
Timothy Youker of Chanhassen, MN
And…

Alan

Mary Nadal of Las Vegas, NV (NADAL?!?)

Patrick Geary of Sheridan, WY
(Didn’t it sound like he was described as a “freeloader”?)

Alan started well, answering 4/5 in Animal Groups.

I got this triple-stumper right in See Food, on a WAG: “Judging by their name, these potatoes would be perfect for Kate Middleton.”

I considered “Cambridge potatoes”! How funny she was mentioned on the same day she had her baby!

Mary smiled after answering this last one before the break, in Age Ain’t Nothin’ but a Number: “This ex-Brat Packer who plays Chris Traeger on ‘Parks & Rec’ is 49 but literally looks better than men half his age.” (Weird use of ‘literally.’) Mr. Trebek noted the smile and said “We’ll talk about that perhaps during the break, after this.” I was hoping he’d ask her about her last name being “Nadal,” but he asked about her past as a flight attendant. Alan though said since his honeymoon he and his wife are trying to visit all 50 state capitals, and he’s been to 45 in 10 years! I wonder if he’s been to Lincoln.

Alan 2800 (6 right)

Patrick 2400 (3 right)

Mary 800 (4 right and one wrong)

I guessed and was right on this first clue after the break, a triple-stumper, in See Food: “Some people grind the seeds of this tropical fruit and use it like pepper, or in salad dressings.”

And I got this triple-stumper in Age Ain’t Nothin’ but a Number because people talk about this show at work: “Perhaps this ‘Big Bang Theory’ character played by Jim Parsons could explain how Jim looks 25 but is actually 40.”

Alan said “Who is Martin Luther King in ‘I Have a Dream’?” in response to this clue in 60s Speeches: “‘I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But…we, as a people, will get to the promised land.” He was counted right but I had my doubts about the “I Have a Dream” part. Indeed, he was negged once Patrick found the Daily Double in the category.

Alan 3800 (3 right and 2 wrong)

Patrick 3800 (2 right)

Mary 3000 (4 right)

This was the clue, on which Patrick wagered 1200: “‘The aircraft of…the United States of America treacherously invaded the air space of the Soviet Union.” Patrick and I got it right. Mary got one of the last two clues right, and the other was a triple-stumper.

Alan 3800

Patrick 5000

Mary 3800

Alan found the first Daily Double of the round in Word & Phrase Origins.

Alan 4200 (One right and one wrong)

Patrick 5000

Mary 3400 (One right and one wrong)

Alan wagered it all on this clue: “A weather event off Cape Ann Oct. 30, 1991 popularized this phrase for when a lot of bad things happen at once.” He didn’t get it.

I should’ve rung in here, but I thought I made it up as far as I knew (category National Things: “It’s the Asian pest seen here.”

Patrick was silent for a while, but he found the Daily Double in Historical Novels.

Alan 2400 (2 right)

Patrick 6600 (2 right and one wrong)

Mary 8200 (4 right)

Patrick wagered 3400 on this clue: “Steven Pressfield’s ‘Gates of Fire’ is an epic novel about this battle lost by the Spartans in 480 B.C.” He got it right!

Mr. Trebek gave the less-than-a-minute warning with 10 clues left! Five of them were left covered.

Alan 8000 (5 right and one wrong)

Patrick 12800 (2 right)

Mary 11800 (4 right and one wrong)

The Final Jeopardy category was Sports Geography. This is the clue: “Though they live elsewhere, Alan Page & Dan Dierdorf will both always be in this Ohio city where they were born.” It took me a while but I came up with it. Alan and Mary were wrong. Alan lost 6000 and Mary didn’t lose anything! Patrick was right though, and added 11000! “What a great way to start the week,” Mr. Trebek said. We’ll see Patrick tomorrow!

My Coryat today was 12000 (18200 without negs).
