Final Jeopardy! category: NAMES IN THE NEWS

Final Jeopardy! clue: This 52-year-old went through a temporary growth spurt, growing 2 inches in less than a year, as revealed by a 2016 physical

Who is Scott Kelly?

(As I have done for the past month, you’ll find final results and full stats in the comment section.)

Remember to vote in our Poll of the Week!
[yop_poll id=”10″]

The 2-inch growth spurt is due to Kelly’s time as commander of Expedition 26 of the International Space Station.

Astronauts do get taller in microgravity. One unique advantage to studying microgravity’s effect on Scott’s body is that he has an identical twin brother, Mark, a former NASA astronaut as well, who spent the last 12 months on Earth.

Astronauts get taller in space because on earth, the spinal disks are slightly compressed due to gravity. Because this compression does not exist in space, it lengthens the spine (leading to a taller astronaut).

Other effects include brittler bones, due to their not having to actually walk around the spacecraft (they haven’t done as much load bearing) and atrophied muscles (again, because they aren’t doing as much work).
