The coat of arms of Bloemfontein, South Africa, seen above, are considered canting in the heraldic world due to the flowers (Bloem) and water (fontein). Canting symbols are ones that generally contain a visual pun or rebus (in Bloemfontein’s case, the bloom & fountain representation.)
Another famous canting symbol are the second and third quarters of the Maryland state flag (seen below), which is the coat of arms of the Crossland family (the symbol is a cross on land). Of course, the first and fourth quarters is the coat of arms of the Calverts. Maryland’s is easily my favorite state flag of the 50 states.
