Final Jeopardy! category: BUSINESSES

Final Jeopardy! clue: An 1860 ad for this business that only lasted 19 months sought “ten or a dozen men, familiar with the management of horses”

What is the Pony Express? (Incorrect responses, if any, and full game stats, can be found in the comments section.)

Valerie 4800 + 3200 + 8000 Shyamlee 18800 + 12201 = 31001 Zach 21000 + 16601 = 37601

From the Pony Express National Historic Trail:

The ad appeared in the March 19, 1860 edition in the Sacramento Union.

While it was only in operation between April 1860 and October 1861, it was able to get mail between St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California (1800 miles) in 10 days — a pace that Canada Post still yearns to match! (Oh, by the way, there’s a good chance of a postal lockout up here. Yay, Canada!)

The express was set up to have a fresh horse every 10-15 miles and a fresh rider every 75-100 miles.
