What is the echidna?

Results will go up on the main page late afternoon, with full stats early evening. They will be seen in the comments section at the bottom of the main page.

The four species of echidna, which belong to the family Tachyglossidae, are found in New Guinea and Australia, with the short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) being the species most found in Australia (the other three, long-beaked echidna belonging to genus Zaglossus, are much rarer, and found on New Guinea).

The echidna is also found on the reverse of the Australian five-cent coin, a design that has not changed since its introduction over 50 years ago.
