I was a little surprised when Stephanie started with Talkin’ Football. Hilary moved to “X”s & “O”s when Stephanie negged on this one: “Robert Griffin III is the first player from this Waco, Texas university to win the Heisman.” I only got this one because this university is in the Big 12, like Nebraska used to be.
I didn’t think this triple-stumper in “X”s & “O”s was as hard as Mr. Trebek made it out to be, considering we had a good idea of the first letter in the correct response: “Let there be light with this element discovered in 1898.” Hilary skipped over to I Thee Wed from there, and I promptly negged on this 200 clue: “‘Weddings for Dummies’ says, ‘If the groom arrives late with a crooked tie’, this person takes the heat.'” Tom got it and took us back to Football.
Tom found the Daily Double of the round in You’ve Been Schooled, prompting him to say “Hello!” Stephanie had been true to form with 5 right and the one neg. She had 1400. Hilary had gotten 3 right and had 1200. Tom had gotten 4 right and had 2800. Tom thought Mr. Trebek wanted him to say “it” (make it a true Daily Double), but I did too. Mr. Trebek was quick to say, “I don’t want you to say anything.” To which I say, Since when? Alas, Tom only wagered 600 on this clue: “From the Greek for ‘many skills’, it’s an engineering school that teaches industrial arts & applied sciences.” I knew the prefix right away but hesitated, wondering if they wanted a suffix, too. I gave the right response, but Tom didn’t. 🙁 I had taken a liking to him; I thought he seemed like a cool dude. This was the last clue before the break.
Were you guys surprised Stephanie mentioned both the college where she works and that she wanted to buy a Chevy Volt with her winnings?
I swept “X”s & “O”s, which means I got this triple-stumper at the end of the category: “It sounds like a big mode of transport, but it’s a congressional bill dealing with a large number of items.”
That Hilary kept going back to I Thee Wed. Eventually I swept Presidential Libraries. I also got this triple-stumper in Looking Down with GeoEye:
At the end of the round, Hilary had 4800 (6 right since the break!), Stephanie had 5600 (also 6 right), and Tom had 2800 (one right). I kinda liked it when Mr. Trebek said Hilary was trailing Stephanie by 800 and Tom was trailing Stephanie by “…more than that.”
I didn’t notice it right away but 1920s Bestsellers had the potential to be good news for me: I was just looking at a book this afternoon, made up of a hundred years’ worth of New York Times Book Reviews. I just flipped into the 1930s today. However, I don’t think anything from the book was on the show today.
This correct response in Summer Entertainment 2012 came up in an episode I saw from the audience before my own episode: “This show about a teacher-turned-meth maker had its most-watched episode with its season 5 premiere.” I wouldn’t have remembered but my sister was surprised the guy got it and he even said “My favorite!”
I got this triple-stumper in Summer Entertainment 2012 thanks to a blog I follow: “A woman disappears on her anniversary in this bestselling alliterative novel by Gillian Flynn.” And actually I discovered the blog when the author left a comment here about a relative that taped Jeopardy! the same week I was there.
Stephanie had gotten 4 in a row right when she found a Daily Double in Alliterative Americans. She had gotten 9 right and one wrong since the round began and had 12000. Tom had gotten one right and had 4000, and Hilary had gotten 2 right and had 6800. Stephanie wagered 2000 on this easy one: “Among the holdings in his financial empire were an aircraft company, RKO Pictures & lots of stock in TWA.” Stephanie got it right, and she got the next one in the category right, sweeping it. Then she got the next clue right in 1920s Bestsellers, giving her the Daily Double in the same category. She had 16800 this time, and wagered 2000 once again. This was the clue: “‘Revolt in the Desert’, about his exploits in Arabia, was a nonfiction bestseller in 1927.” She got this one with no trouble, too. She drew another round of applause when he completed the category.
But don’t count Hilary out just yet – She got 6 right (and one wrong) before the end of the round! She answered the last three right and went from 6800 to 12400, keeping the game from being a runaway since she had 24400. Tom still had 4000.
The Final Jeopardy category was Nonfiction. This was the clue: “In an 1854 work, this title body of water was compared with the proportions of Loch Fyne.” It took me a little while but I’m happy to report I came up with it. It stumped all three contestants! Tom wagered 0, Hilary lost 12201, and Stephanie lost just 1000, making her a 4-time champion now. She looked giddy, sort of making jazz hands and pointing at her total, 90170, on the screen.
So yes, I am tweaking the ToC list today. Stephanie was in 11th place on the list yesterday, and now she’s in 7th!
