The First Geneva Convention from 1864 was formed after Henri Dunant visited wounded soldiers after the 1859 Battle of Solferino and he was shocked by the lack of medical aid available to those wounded on the battlefield. It led to the founding of the Red Cross and the Geneva Convention, an international treaty covering battlefield sick and wounded. Dunant was co-awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize for these accomplishments.
Article 7 of the 1864 Geneva Convention reads:
A distinctive and uniform flag shall be adopted for hospitals, ambulances and evacuation parties. It should in all circumstances be accompanied by the national flag. An armlet may also be worn by personnel enjoying neutrality but its issue shall be left to the military authorities. Both flag and armlet shall bear a red cross on a white ground.
