The winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for 2006’s The Road, Cormac McCarthy was born Charles McCarthy. He got the name Cormac from Cormac mac Cuilennáin, king of Munster in Ireland from 902 to 908. Why the name change? According to No Place for Home: Spatial Constraint and Character Flight in the Novels of Cormac McCarthy by Jay Ellis, the explanation came from friend Leslie Garrett in an interview to Knoxville journalist Don Williams: “what serious writer would want to be called Charlie McCarthy in the era of Edgar Bergen’s ventriloquist act?” (Edgar Bergen’s dummy was Charlie McCarthy.)
