Brazzaville, the capital city of the Republic of the Congo, is named for Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, he was instrumental in the French obtaining access to one bank of the Congo river (the Belgians had the other bank). The two capital cities of Kinshasa and Brazzaville sit at a rapids along the Congo. Back in the colonial period, both the French and Belgians built separate railways from this rapids point to the ocean.
