What is “Brexit”?

The portmanteau “Brexit” was coined to describe the 2016 United Kingdom referendum in which they voted to leave the European Union by a percentage of 52% to 48%. In the same fashion that “Grexit” was used to describe the possible Greek exit from the Euro, Brexit merged “Britain” and “exit”.
