The United States Forest Service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, administers the US’ 154 national forests and 20 national grasslands. It is also the only major land agency in the US that is not part of the Deprtment of the Interior. It was founded during Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency when it transferred the management of forest reseves from the General Land Office of the Interior Department to the Bureau of Forestry, renamed the United States Forest Service.
Sawyers are the wood-cutters who do most of the work maintaining the forests.
