Correct response: What are cherries?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
Remembering that a hazelnut is botanically not a fruit (it is a true nut), the cherry originates from the Cerasus area of Turkey (currently known as Giresun), even providing the scientific name of the sour cherry (Prunus cerasus). The cherry was first exported from Cerasus in the first century BCE.

Picked the wrong Latin root and thought “what fruit might be mistaken for having a waxy cover?” and went dates.
I know the upcoming contestants in a tournament don’t watch the games, for obvious reasons, but does the same hold for regular games? Wes has won two days in a row in amazingly similar fashion, so if the same FJ! scenario we’re to unfold omorrow, the leader might just be tempted to wager low or not at all.
In regular play, contestants who have not yet been called up to play sit in the studio audience, not in the green room – so they absolutely can see Wes’s wagering thus far, and account for it as they choose.
Thanks, that’s very interesting to know.
“Cerasus” = cherry in Latin.
Second strike out in as many games.
Second win by Wes with a smart/sneaky bet, I wonder if he can jump on the ToC list with a third win?? Those sneaky bets don’t always work, eventually somebody is going to come up with a right answer in FJ this week I hope…..
i don’t understand the reference to hazel nuts in the explained answer on this page.
With the exception of it not being a fruit, hazelnuts also fit both halves of “Turkey is the largest producer of them” and “originates in Cerasus”.
Another triple stumper in Final Jeopardy today. I hope we won’t go 0 for 9 tomorrow or there will be chaos.
A fairer category title would have been Agricultural Genuses. How many Americans think of Turkey as a big cherry producer. If you have to know Latin in order to get the answer, the category title should hint at that.
To anyone coming to the site inquiring about phrasing:
I listened to this game with headphones on. I can say with absolute 100% certainty that proper phrasing was given on every single clue.
Comments regarding this can be considered incredibly disrespectful towards contestants, especially in tonight’s case, and thus are in violation of the Site Comment Policy.
I got this right, but only because “kerasi” is also Greek for cherry…
