Correct response: Who is Franklin Pierce?

Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, now including Jason Zuffranieri and James Holzhauer, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

More information about Final Jeopardy:

Franklin Pierce’s presidency (from 1853 to 1857) was very unpopular; the political turmoil resulting from the Kansas–Nebraska Act harmed his administration, led to the founding of the Republican Party, and also led to James Buchanan’s 1856 nomination. Following his presidency, Pierce spent three years in Europe and the Bahamas before retiring to New Hampshire; he had a close friendship with author Nathaniel Hawthorne (Hawthorne’s last novel was controversially dedicated to Pierce).

  1. If you know there’s a college named for him in New Hampshire, that may help solve this one.

  2. When I saw Concord, I thought Massachusetts, and was stumped because the “obscurity” part of the clue didn’t fit either Adams. Only someone well versed in presidential history is likely to know much about Pierce. This seems like one of those times where someone in a position to strategically bet nothing in FJ might end up winning.

  3. Today’s results will be delayed.

    • Thanks for the heads up. I get worried.

    • There are numerous afternoon delays as the networks are electing to cover George Floyd’s funeral.

      Black lives matter.

      • 2020 has not been fair by anybody so far. First, the coronavirus crisis, now the protests of George Floyd. There’s no telling when it’ll likely end.

  4. Andy, I knew why results are delayed. Some things are more important than who won today’s game. I am sorry you had people ranking about it. I, for one, appreciate the stellar job you do with this site. And I hope everyone is watching Mr. Floyd’s memorial service today because Black Lives Do Indeed Matter.

  5. This was a sad game, but happy for Zach. His last name of Newkirk reminds me of the character in the old 60s show Hogan’s Heroes played by Richard Dawson.

  6. Brad (not Rutter) | June 9, 2020 at 5:08 pm |

Ironic. Of Morgan’s 3 games, this was the one he looked like he was going to run away with.

  7. My best friend from high school went to Franklin Pierce College so when I heard Concord thought immediately of New Hampshire and Pierce. Congrats to Zach for nice comeback after miserable Jeopardy round. BLACK LIVES CERTAINLY MATTER. Thanks for this terrific site Andy.

  8. Re: Andy’s Thoughts
And Zach’s comeback didn’t start until DJ! was half over…he stood at -1000 with 15 clues left…2 of which were left unplayed! Quite the furious finish indeed.
