Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, February 1, 2022

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Geography) for Tuesday, February 1, 2022 (Season 38, Game 102):

This city on the Rhone River that is partly a World Heritage Site was papal property until the French Revolution

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Scott Plummer, a software developer from Golden, Colorado
Scott Plummer on Jeopardy!
Zoha Khalili, a movement lawyer from Anaheim, California
Zoha Khalili on Jeopardy!
Jay Foster, an engineer from Rancho Palos Verdes, California (2-day total: $25,599)
Jay Foster on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Jay Foster looks for his third win today as the Jeopardy! world is returning to normal after the 40-game win streak of Amy Schneider. Mayim Bialik began a short stint as host last night; I was actually surprised by the negative reception she received on social media. It just seemed to me that the majority of the conversation on Twitter last night was disappointment that Ken wasn’t hosting.

One thing I am looking forward to, is the continuation of box scores—I am especially liking the buzzer attempt statistics. I have some theories and I’d love to have more granular data in order to prove or disprove the theories on; that being said, the current data has some insight that I think will be very useful for contestant preparation going forward. (I’d just like to have more than 14 episodes of data before I jump to conclusions.)

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, now including Matt Amodio, Jonathan Fisher, and Amy Schneider, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2022 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

In the 14th century, Pope Clement V chose to reside in Avignon, France instead of Rome; until the French Revolution, the city was a papal enclave, with the Palais des Papes located in the city. During the French Revolution, though, the revolutionaries annexed the city for France. In 1797, the Treaty of Tolentino officially sanctioned the annexation. The center of the city, including the Palais des Papes, was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

Additionally, the historic bridge Pont Saint-Bénézet is located in the city; it is only partially still standing today. The bridge is the title bridge of the well-known French song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon”.

Zoha is a Jeopardy! fan because of her grandfather.
Jay helped researched his family ancestry to help get a family member into the DAR.
Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Commenters are reminded that the judges have the ability to isolate and re-listen to contestant audio. Their failure to overturn a response means that they believe a contestant did, in fact, give a correct response. Their judgement calls will not be re-litigated in this comment section.
  • With 8 clues remaining in Double Jeopardy, the score was Scott 16,200–Jay 14,000–Zoha 3,200.
  • After Zoha’s great comeback at the end of Double to take the lead, I was actually disappointed that she wasn’t able to complete the comeback in Final.

tch It’s not a historical period I know a lot about. My guess was Lyon, the only French city on the Rhone I could think of that also has a connection to the Revolution. Strike two! 🙁
Waiting to see how Jay performs today. If he can improve on his buzzer timing, he might have a decent run.

  2. I had not heard of the term “movement lawyer” before today. Thanks to Google I now know what Zoha does. Nice.

  3. Wonderfully competitive game by all three players today. Not that I don’t love a good winning streak like Matt or Amy’s, but I also live for shows where all the contestants are in it until the very end.

As for the social media response to Mayim hosting this week, I lay blame completely on Sony and/or the producers for not lifting a finger to communicate when its hosts will take their turns. The viewers are left surprised when they tune in, for better or worse. I personally prefer Ken as the host by a considerable margin, and I’m sure there is a good chunk that likes Mayim better- but as the days go on, setting up these two on the same show to essentially compete for the job is just reigniting the strain of the hosting interregnum. The competition should be between the contestants, not the personnel. Despite some incredible contestant successes this season, I am not convinced that the show has regained the goodwill of its audience yet.

    • Jim….thank you for your comments regarding the hosting situation. Very well said and right on. Hopefully management will get their act together soon. They have lost what really matters.

    • Right on on both fronts, Jim. I don’t think this two-host project will go how they anticipated, unless the executives decide to stick to their original plan of having separate ones for the syndicated show and the primetime versions. If they decide to backtrack on that, particularly with how well Ken has done as a host this season, people won’t let them forget about it.

  4. Avignon was the answer I got even though it is a beautiful sight that I never visited. But still Jay had a decent run but it is unfortunante he didn’t get a 4 game streak. Maybe Scott can do it so you might never know. If Scott can improve his buzzer skills he might have a shot at the 100000 dollar run should that happen. Glad to see two people getting this. I would love to have seen Zoha getting this as well.

  5. I can’t wait to see the box score for today’s game, particularly the buzzer data.

  6. The producers announced months ago that both Ken and Mayim would have alternating hosting stints for at least this entire season. Yet people act all surprised when they change.
Seems like there are alot of Ken fans who just like to complain whenever Mayim is on. There are also some Mayim fans that complain when Ken is on, but it seems like a higher percentage of Mayim fans are more civil about it. (or maybe alot of those whining about Mayim aren’t actually Ken fans, they just hate her that much).
Personally, I’m fine with either of them.

I had to leave the episode early and was wondering why Scott’s answer of “bumblebee hummingbird” was incorrect? Was this rectified later?

  8. Libby Brown | February 1, 2022 at 9:49 pm |

I thought this game had two very difficult responses where even if you knew the response, it would be easy to trip up and get it wrong.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

  9. I recall thinking how difficult it would be to rattle off that title. Sometimes Am of the opinion that, had Alex been here, answers like these wouldn’t have made the cut. I imagine a small portion of the population could respond to this. Alex liked to keep the clues reasonable and fair. I truly hope that this practice won’t continue.

  10. I like Ken, but I love Mayim. It’s so great to see a smart woman hosting a game show, finally!
