Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, March 21, 2022

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great day today. Ken Jennings will be hosting this week’s episodes. So, without any further ado: here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Singers) for Monday, March 21, 2022 (Season 38, Game 136):

In 2021 at age 95, this singer achieved a Guinness World Record for the oldest person to release an album of new material

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Karen Johnson, a member acquisition coordinator from Portland, Oregon
Karen Johnson on Jeopardy!
Margaret Chipowsky, an attorney from Lawrenceville, New Jersey
Margaret Chipowsky on Jeopardy!
Finn Corrigan, a student from Vista, California (2-day total: $39,602)
Finn Corrigan on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: 2-day champion Finn Corrigan returns to defend his title after a win Friday. Further proving just how strong the College players are, Finn was an alternate for the primetime (on ABC) Jeopardy! National College Championship. There were a few people wondering why Finn’s school—UCLA—was mentioned on Friday, when this hadn’t been mentioned in the past for some others. Basically, if the show thinks it’s worthwhile to mention, they will. There’s really nothing more than that.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

In October 2021, Tony Bennett (and Lady Gaga) released their second collaboration, this one titled Love for Sale (their first was 2014’s Cheek to Cheek.) This will very likely be Bennett’s final album, as he chose to retire shortly before the album’s release, with his family worried about the potential that Bennett might fall and injure himself on stage (as he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2016). His final shows were performed in August, with Lady Gaga, at Radio City Music Hall.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round categories: Picture/Book; Boating Glossary; Dance Off, Bro!; 4-Letter Countries; Films of the 1990s; Let Your Star Guide You

I’m sure the opening break was very welcome for all three players, who scattered 5 Triple Stumpers and 4 incorrect responses over the first 15 clues. Finn, though, did pick up $1000 on an early Daily Double. Coming out of the break, things were a little better, and Margaret held a $2,000 lead after Single Jeopardy; Finn and Karen were tied. (Finn selects first in Double Jeopardy, as his lectern is closest to the host.)

Double Jeopardy! Round categories: Groups in History; Seismic Activity; The Ancients Speak; Giving You a Plum Assignment; Childhood Homes; 3 Letters In A Row Alphabetically

Karen had a very strong performance to open the round, picking up the bottom four clues in GROUPS IN HISTORY (punctuated by the first Daily Double.) In fact, we went from clue 23 of the Jeopardy! round to clue 20 of Double Jeopardy! without an incorrect response or a Triple Stumper. Late in the round, after everyone consciously avoided 3 LETTERS IN A ROW ALPHABETICALLY, Karen got the last Daily Double—but decided on a conservative bet. Going into Final, the scores were Karen at $15,400, with Finn at $11,400 and Margaret at $9,800.

In Final, only Margaret was able to come up with the correct response—and that means she becomes the new Jeopardy! champion! She’ll defend her title tomorrow.

Today’s interviews:
Karen portrayed Alex Trebek in a theatre camp as a teenager.
Margaret was on TV at a Philadelphia Phillies game eating ice cream.
Finn has a vintage Audobon guide as a treasured possession.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Thus far in Season 38, contestants are 65% on Daily Doubles at the $1200 level. Karen’s chances of winning, overall, would be higher had she bet aggressively for a runaway on the final Daily Double, as opposed to trying to win the game in Final.
  • A new feature at the very end of the episode: The show highlighted tomorrow’s two challengers! I liked seeing that!
  • Link to the box score: March 21, 2022 Box Score

Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions:

Finn: You’re in Stratton’s Dilemma today; you can’t both cover Margaret and win a Double Stumper with Karen. I’d lean towards $8,201—but if you hate the category, then less than $3,400 works too.

Margaret: I’d bet between $1,601 and $1,800 (this will stay above Karen’s score if she’s incorrect, while also forcing Finn to make a bet if you’re correct.)

Karen: Standard cover bet today is $7,401.

  1. The only old singer I could think of was Bennett.

  2. Mary A Rose | March 21, 2022 at 12:47 pm |

The first record I was given to play on my brand new record player was “Rags to Riches,” sung by none other than Mr. Bennett himself. Yes, that goes back a few years. Wonderful memories.

  3. Michael Johnston | March 21, 2022 at 12:50 pm |

Yeah, this one seemed kinda easy, and just what I needed to break my losing streak!

    Current FJ streak – 1W

  4. Marvin Gregory “Greg” Fuller | March 21, 2022 at 1:42 pm |

This was a question recently on a rerun of the Chase.

  5. Pam Schultz | March 21, 2022 at 1:44 pm |

Broke my losing streak, as well. Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett made beautiful music together despite his dementia diagnosis. I think the video is amazing to watch.

  6. I love their version of ‘baby it’s cold outside’

  7. Baby its cold outside was one of my favorite tony Bennett songs ive heard. I easily got this one. Congrats marge.

  8. I knew that neither Willie Nelson nor Loretta Lynn were old enough (both 88) and that Bob Dylan, Barbara Streisand and The Rolling Stones were old but younger than that. I knew Rita Moreno was at least 90 and that she sang a new song in the new West Side Story, so I thought maybe she was 95 and made an album centered around the movie WSS song. And Dick Van Dyke was 91 when he released a solo album in 2017, so he would have been 95 had he released another one last year. [He should release another one now and beat the Guinness World Record.]

I had heard about Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga but did not realize he was that old — I’d assumed he just looked old since I knew he had been in poor health.

I guessed Moreno just because she “had it going on” in 2021 due to the new WSS movie, with her being an EGOT adding underlying cachet for getting an album produced nowadays. But, honestly, within the answering time limit, Tony/Gaga did not even come to mind because I’m not “into” her and my mother had not been “into” him, so my other [wrong] possibilities were more “front of mind”.

Tony Bennett was TINA (there is no alternative) for me. I couldn’t think of anyone else who could possibly fit the clue.

  10. Good competitive game today. I was surprised that very late in the DJ round, with a DD still out, Karen and then Finn both went to clues that wouldn’t have it. Maybe they lost track of the DDs. It just seemed curious that people would do that who were running the board in a way that looked like they wanted to find the second DD.

  11. If anybody out there has had a rough day and needs to decompress, I guarantee Tony Bennett’s rendition of “Fly Me To The Moon” will do the trick, calm you down, probably even lower your blood pressure. His version (IMHO) is better than Sinatra’s. If anyone has a spare 4 minutes or so, check this out…Before he gets into the song, the preface itself is heavenly, then he hits this note at 1:03 that takes you to another world, then the tickling of the ivories right after that note…gets me every time…Genius!
