Happy Banned Wager Day! Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category On the Internet) for Wednesday, April 20, 2022 (Season 38, Game 158):
This website launched in 2015 with 3 offerings, from James Patterson, Dustin Hoffman & Serena Williams
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Sean Wong, an IT support student from Wayzata, Minnesota![]() |
Loni Lewis, a teacher/librarian from Charleston, South Carolina![]() |
Mattea Roach, a tutor from Toronto, Ontario, Canada (11-day total: $244,882)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Canadian Mattea Roach enters into today’s game with 11 victories and nearly US$250,000 in winnings (her winnings at today’s exchange rate would come out to $306,982.85 Canadian). A win today would have her surpass Jonathan Fisher as the #3 seed for the November Tournament of Champions, and—barring a historic collapse today—she will surpass 300 correct responses early in today’s show.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

MasterClass was founded in 2015 by David Rogier and Aaron Rasmussen and is an online education website where subscribed students can access pre-recorded tutorials and lectures from experts in wide-ranging fields. The original classes were Dustin Hoffman teaching acting, Serena Williams teaching tennis, and James Patterson teaching writing. One recent MasterClass in the news in some spheres was the March 2022 announcement of Tyler “Ninja” Blevins teaching a MasterClass on how to become a professional Twitch streamer; this class’s content is already becoming panned within the Twitch streaming community.

Game Recap:
Jeopardy! Round: Mattea got off to a strong start in this one, picking up 9 of the first 15 clues! Meanwhile, Loni and Sean both struggled a little bit with incorrect responses. Mattea’s strong play continued with her picking up another 9 after the break, whereas both challengers struggled to get any sort of momentum going.
Double Jeopardy! Round: (I’ve chosen not to include today’s categories out of fear of demonetization over the title of the fourth category in this round.)
Sean got off to a good start, but unfortunately his attempt to catch up to Mattea was derailed by a missed True Daily Double on clue #11. Sean was never able to get back on track after that, and we had the rare occurrence of a single-player Final Jeopardy!—Mattea ended the round at $21,400; Loni had -$600 and Sean -$1,600.
Mattea did get Final correct today and added $5,000 to become a 12-day champion, total winnings $271,282!

I had to stretch my brain to remember the connection between Patterson and Serena… I still don’t recall seeing Hoffman in the promos.
Current FJ streak: 1W
Oof. Wouldn’t have got that one if they gave me 20 minutes. I had been on a solid FJ run since “Velcro” too.
Went with Cameo, because the start date seemed plausible (apparently it was founded in 2016 and launched in 2017) and I couldn’t think of a common connection between the three individuals other than being famous. (They also did not seem like a line-up meant to entice teens onto a new social media platform like TikTok, lol.) My wife came to the same guess with essentially the same reasoning, and she is generally a lot hipper than me, so I wonder if any contestants will fall into that trap.
I wouldn’t have answered this correctly in 200 minutes – I’m on a bad FJ run
Ditto. I thought maybe the website (I’d heard mentioned) where you can buy outgoing messages recorded by celebrities, but [out of curiosity, not “to cheat”] I looked that up online and it seems there are more than one. The only two I could identify by a name was one that is primarily for other (more important) things (like security) that was founded in 2007 and one that is primarily (just?) for celebrity recorded messages, but [surprising to me] wasn’t founded until 2019.
I had the same thought as you about it possibly being TikTok, though I also didn’t think it went back to 2015. So, I was right about that because it has the same founding/launch dates as Cameo.
First post-Alex Trebek single Final Jeopardy. As he would say, “This was not one of our finest days.”
Mattea is such a natural contestant. She is so happy and cheerful and truly a breath of fresh air.
I’m enjoying her greatly – ditto your good words – she’s only 23 – how in the world ? – as some May say- she’s simply a phenom – with a delightful personality
I’m a big fan of Mattea in general, but I want to see some more ambitious betting, especially when a situation such as it does in today’s game presents itself. No reason to bet so little on either the final DD or on the FJ.
She is now 14/16 on DDs. That should be a strong reason to be much more aggressive late in the game with a win already in hand. FJ is more a matter of the category.
It seems unlikely that she’ll change her play style drastically at this point but yeah it would be nice to see.
No reason? That’s real money once you’ve locked uo the win. How often do you wager 5000 dollars real money on anything?
Well, the wager comes with odds (prior to this “play”) of 13/15. How often do you get odds like that?
I accept your argument that she is playing with her own money at that point, but many other very successful contestants have had a history of raising the bet when the game is locked in. Why? Could be any reason… but I’m willing to bet it’s partially their competitiveness and partially the fact that they have already made a significant sum from the other wins.
See Matt Amodio: losing 30k+ and winning 30k+ from different FJ outcomes. Matt always has made a point that the amount he was betting quite scared him because it was the equivalent of his entire annual earnings (prior to appearing on the game show), but he made the bet nevertheless.
The way I think of it, the money’s not real until the game is over. You’re still playing with potential until then, and the secondary goal of playing (the first being to win) is to maximize your potential.
Has there ever been a triple negative such that no FJ question was asked?
I know we have had a few very rare “everyone at zero” games, but I would assume that a triple negative has never happened. But then its hard to fathom a double negative.
I had never seen one (and I was watching since the Art Fleming days!) According to a 1980s era book on TV game shows, it did happen on the Art Fleming version, but there is no actual proof. Additionally, that said book, by Maxine Fabe, contained errors, so the statement it occurred is anecdotal at best.
Wow mattea is on a roll so far. Despite missing three or four fj responses she is very confident. But this is the first i have seen her playing solo in final since Kevin Walsh and Kristen Sausville. I remember seeing Hoffman in the promos but i never took master classes.
It always blows my mind when we get a double negative. That doesn’t happen very often. And then a solo Final Jeopardy… which I didn’t get, because I can’t recall ever hearing much about that site.
Mattea is doing excellently, and her strategy of focusing on lead preservation is how you win Jeopardy games. Remember that it’s always better to win a game at $16,799 than it is to lose, because that way you keep it AND get to come back for more. All she’s trying to do is win games. That makes her scary.
Also, I’m a little confused as to why you didn’t include the categories.
There was a word that is potentially against Google’s ad guidelines in the name of the categories. Knowing how capricious their algorithms are, I’m not risking the monetization of the content over it. Sorry.
No need to apologize. I’m just glad that you were aware of the potential problem and could thus avoid the risk. But TBH I don’t get much out of seeing the category names without seeing the clues anyway.
How much would Mattea have earned today if she bet it all and got FJ wrong?
She would have earned a $2,000 consolation prize, and her run would have ended, had she finished at $0.
would they have given two $2000 consolation prizes (with the third contestant getting 1K) in that situation, I wonder? [edit: looking at previous games where all 3 ended up with scores of 0 or less, the answer is yes: two getting the 2K consolation prize]
Thank you
Well was there ever a contestant on Jeopardy that did not come up with any correct responses at all?
Give me the chance, and I’ll show you…
I hadn’t seen a single-player FJ before. I was curious whether or not the privacy screens would be raised; I could make arguments for the production team choosing either option.
The screens were left down.
