Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, April 22, 2022

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Names) for Friday, April 22, 2022 (Season 38, Game 160):

DNA from 2 living descendants of Anne of York was used to identify the remains of this man

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Anna Meyer, a food technologist from Seattle, Washington
Anna Meyer on Jeopardy!
Claire Dozier, a non-profit professional from Atlanta, Georgia
Claire Dozier on Jeopardy!
Mattea Roach, a tutor from Toronto, Ontario, Canada (13-day total: $286,081)
Mattea Roach on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Mattea Roach is very consistently putting up about $20,000 before Final Jeopardy! every day; not quite as dominant as Matt Amodio or Amy Schneider, but she’s won 13 games and is going for victory #14 today. Claire’s husband Jason was on the show in December 2019; will Claire do better than Jason did?

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

The remains of English king Richard III were found within the former Grey Friars Priory, now a parking lot, in Leicester, England in 2012. In order to determine that the body belonged to the former king, they did extensive DNA testing, using the DNA of descendants of his sister. The remains were re-interred at Leicester Cathedral in March 2015.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round categories: Drafting the Constitution; 1980s TV; Animal, Vegetable, Mineral, Old Job Names; All Things Being Equal; Crossword Clues “K”

Mattea went straight for the crossword clue category, where she proceeded to go 4-for-5 to jump out to a lead. Coming out of the break, the scores were kept down by 8 combined incorrect responses between the two commercials—but we did see all 30 clues! Mattea held a strong lead after Single Jeopardy, while Claire picked up the maximum $1,000 on the Daily Double.

Double Jeopardy! Round categories: Flags of Former Countries; Firsts; Memorable Movie Melodies; French Words in English; Whine; Cheese

Mattea dominated proceedings in Double Jeopardy, with the Canadian picking up 16 correct in this round. Another conservative Daily Double bet—even after some playful needling from Ken—kept the variance down. Anna had a late chance, but missed a True Daily Double with four clues left. Scores going into Final were Mattea at $26,000, with Claire at $2,800 and Anna at $1,600.

Mattea cemented her 14th win with a correct response in Final; she’ll go for 15 on Monday!

  1. This one got a lot of play in the media. I got it right away.

  2. Michael Johnston | April 22, 2022 at 10:53 am |

meh… I haven’t learned much more about English royalty history since last week’s QEI business, so I wouldn’t even hazard a guess ;p I suppose the relative recency of the related news story might be a cue for some people though.

    Current FJ streak: 1L

  3. Wasn’t this subject a Jeopardy question before, maybe even a Final Jeopardy? Not that long ago?

Just wondering why Ken Jennings is introduced as “… and now, hosting Jeopardy…” and Mayam is introduced as “…and now,the host of Jeopardy…”

    • I don’t know, and anyone who does know hasn’t said anything, in spite of dozens of news articles asking this exact question.

      • My theory is that it’s because Ken already worked for the show as a consulting producer before all of the guest host shenanigans occurred, but I could be wrong!

    • My guess is that Mayim is an official host since she was announced for primetime shows with Richards doing the nightly show, and Ken’s technically a fill-in still. I got a good feeling about Ken’s chances, though.

  5. A. A really bad FJ week for me 🙁
    B. I like both Ken and Mayim and could live with either of them as the permanent host – though if push came to shove, I’d probably pick Ken. I certainly respect the passion that people have for the program, but I don’t get the need for some people to run down one possible host or the other – people should just say who they like and leave it at that. Humbly submitted……

      A. Sorry 🙁 Losing streaks happen, but you’ll work out of it. I had a seven game losing streak back in February, but I started an eight game win streak just a few days after.
      B. Yeah. I’m fine if the show goes with either one, but I’d really like for them to continue tag-teaming the hosting duties.

  6. That’s why I thought I had it — as Richard the Lionheart — but that turned out to be wrong as he was Richard I.

(I could still swear that some news piece said it was Richard the Lionheart, but I am well aware that news reporters do not always get every single detail right, so I may have ACTUALLY heard that. Or perhaps early on they thought that might be who the remains belonged to.)

    • If my first phrase sounded odd, that’s because it was meant to be a reply to the first comment (by Kim Allen), but somehow did not attach.

  7. I wish the constant consternation about hosting Jeopardy would just stop. Ken and Mayim each do a fine job. They both also have other commitments in their careers. Switching back and forth can accommodate both and still impart stability to the show’s production, which is very much needed. The Mike Richards’ “tryouts” garnered a tremendous amount of publicity, a lot of which was not positive, and from which I think the show is still recovering. Just admit the current system is working well and be done with it.

    • Technically Ken’s no longer on Master Minds or The Chase. He definitely has a clean slate compared to Mayim.

  8. Really nice what Mattea is doing. Shows faith some young people know things pre 21st century. 😀

  9. As a Wisconsinite, I loved seeing the cheese curds clue. I had a plate at Great Dane last week – good stuff!

I had no idea with the FJ and my only instinct was the same as Anna’s. I must’ve missed the news on it, plus I have no idea about British Royal Family lineage.

    • You had not even heard that Diana Spencer was a descendant of both Henry VII and Charles II? I think I saw somewhere that she had more royal BRITISH blood than Prince Charles or the Queen. Remember much of the Queen’s is GERMAN and much of Charles’ father Phillip’s royal blood was Greek and Danish?

      • leadership should be determined by ability, not bloodline

        • Royal bloodlines are a matter of history and celebrity (and sometimes gossip), not leadership. And “leadership should be determined by ability” is itself an ideal, not that we actually get that very often.

Supposedly a growing body of research in psychology and neuroscience suggests that believing in meritocracy makes people more selfish, less self-critical and even more prone to acting in discriminatory ways.

How many world leaders have been TRAINED for leadership their whole lives? Answer: mostly those who were born for it. Perhaps the best example is the Dalai Lama but Queen Elizabeth II is a good example, too.
