Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, April 25, 2023

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the April 25, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category TV History) for Tuesday, April 25, 2023 (Season 39, Game 162):

The 1980s “Magnum, P.I.” used a soundstage of this long-running drama that had just ended, & even referred to its lead character

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Johanna Stoberock, a fiction writer & adjunct professor from Walla Walla, Washington
Johanna Stoberock on Jeopardy!
Ian Marquand, a retired broadcaster & state medical board executive from Los Angeles, California
Ian Marquand on Jeopardy!
Dillon Hupp, a development director from North Little Rock, Arkansas (1-day total: $21,999)
Dillon Hupp on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Arkansas’ Dillon Hupp is your new champion after a strong game yesterday; however, there was a lot to be desired in terms of Daily Double hunting overall; Dillon went to the top row of the board with a Daily Double still out seven different times yesterday. Doing more to keep the Daily Doubles to himself will be crucial for putting together a long run. Today’s challengers are Walla Walla fiction writer & adjunct professor Johanna Stoberock and L.A. retired broadcaster Ian Marquand.

When Hawaii Five-O was canceled in 1980, CBS didn’t want to let the Hawaii Film Studio go to waste; thus, Magnum, P.I. was also filmed there; in at least one occasion during the Tom Selleck series, “Detective McGarrett” was used as an alias. (Steve McGarrett was the fictional protagonist of Hawaii Five-O.)

I would normally say that this is the sort of Final Jeopardy! clue that plays easier for the home audience—many at home would have watched both of those shows—but I expect at least one challenger today, if not two, to get this correct.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • The Final Jeopardy! betting today was generally strategically sound, even though Johanna made a math error. Ian was essentially covering Dillon, and Dillon was protecting against a possibility that Ian might not cover.
  • With regards to clue selection: People are going to play the game the way they want to. That doesn’t make them any less of a person. (And I’m sure that Sarah was still feeling frustrated in the studio that the players finished STATESMEN & WOMEN even though the Daily Double was already found).
  • Today’s box score: April 25, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Johanna $15,600 Ian $11,600 Dillon $10,600)

Dillon: While Ian can’t both win a Double Stumper with Johanna and cover you, you’re probably best playing for a Triple Stumper here. Limit your bet to $2,599. If not, go all in to force Ian to cover you. (Actual bet: $10,600)

Ian: You’re in what is known as Stratton’s Dilemma—you can’t both cover Dillon and win a Double Stumper with Johanna. Either go all-in, or bet $1,601 (covering Dillon’s small range). (Actual bet: $11,000)

Johanna: Standard cover bet over Ian is $7,601. (Actual bet: $8,601)

Yeah, that was pretty easy… long running show based in Hawaii that ended by 1980? Gotta be 5-O.

    • Having never watched Magnum, P.I. I didn’t know it was based in Hawaii. So, I guessed Rockford Files.

      • The Rockford Files was an excellent show – James Garner was superb

I watched Magnum PI fairly often, so knew it was set in Hawaii – which led directly to Hawaii 5-0 as the answer

        • Bill Vollmer | April 26, 2023 at 11:00 am |

I always loved Garner’s Rockford, and, everytime the theme is played on an “oldies” radio station, I can see Jim driving around the LA area in his Firebird.
And, yes, knowing that Magnum (both the original, and, currnet series,) was based in Hawai’i, should lead one to the correct response of “What was Hawaii Five-O?” And, Hawai’i Five-0 succeded the orginal Magnum in using the Hawai’i studio.
Andy; if the players on stage had answered “what is Hawaii Five-0?, would they still have been ruled correct, even though the Jack Lord series used “Five-the letter”O,” while the one that finished it’s run just a year, or, two, ago used Hawaii Five the number ‘0’?

      • I never watched Magnum, P.I., either and also guessed The Rockford Files as I knew the timing was right and thought Rockford’s name being used as an Easter Egg would be natural as a fellow P.I. I did watch Hawaii-5-0 (though mostly for the opening music), but thought it was older than it was (as I thought I remembered being much younger when I did watch it). It turns out I WAS much younger when I mostly watched it, I just also did not remember that it aired for 12 seasons.

  2. I will be curious if everyone plays the old school jeopardy style again today like they did yesterday.
Dillon may be in for a rude awakening if his challengers are on the hunt.

  3. Katerina E. | April 25, 2023 at 11:24 am |

Being just old enough to remember the end of the original Hawaii Five-O run, I was pretty confident in this answer, even without knowing recalling the references to Detective McGarrett in Magnum. But I can’t help but think you’re expecting the two grey-haired contestants to be the ones with the easier time with the clue. 😉

  4. I watched BOTH shows. BUT got this response wrong. I guess I just was not really thinking of the time period mentioned. Book ’em Dano!

  5. Not hard for me. That’s my era for tv shows.

  6. Sergio Monarca | April 25, 2023 at 1:05 pm |

The “drama” aspect threw me in this case. If it were labeled as “detective series”, it may have been easier to answer, but perhaps more appropriate…As a a teenager, watching the opening music and crashing waves is such a fond memory.

  7. Pretty darn easy for an old guy like me.

  8. Michael Johnston | April 25, 2023 at 1:49 pm |

Huh, it turned out to actually be easier for the home audience. I wasn’t expecting a triple stumper on this one🤷

  9. Robert Fawkes | April 25, 2023 at 5:34 pm |

For some reason, I’ve always mixed up “Hawaii Five-O” and “Magnum, P.I.” in my mind. My confusion led to making this one easy for me. Now, I think I know why.

  10. My opinion on Dillon’s wager is this; Yes, going all in does force Ian to cover. But that also risks the possibility of knocking you out of contention completely on an incorrect response. In this situation, the absolute highest I would go with my wager is all but a dollar. Not only is the sole dollar left off extremely unlikely to make a difference (unless Ian only bets to tie), but winning with $1 is infinitely more probable than winning with $0.

  11. Just a bit of trivia for Magnum fans…Ferrari supplied a brand new 308 GTS for each production season. Also, notice the top is always open the Ferrari? That’s because Tom Selleck, at 6’4″, is taller than the roofline of those cars.

    • Yes, I had heard that about the open roof, though it does have the bonus of implying that the weather is ALWAYS beautiful in Hawaii!

  12. That was challenging final. I lived through that era and watched Magnum, but the last bit was more confusing then helpful. I assumed PI was mention. I don’t remember Magnum ever referencing Hawaii 5-0. Anyway. I think if you are behind you should bet for a triple stumper. It is more likely that the person ahead of you knows what you know then it is that you know something they do not (I speculate).

    • I think the [implied unique] reference to Hawaii-5-0 in Magnum, P.I. is funny considering that “5-0” became slang for all policing-type authorities and we have heard it repeatedly for years (or decades?) in many TV shows and movies.
