Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Publications) for Monday, May 15, 2023 (Season 39, Game 176):
The co-founder of this magazine that began in 1967 said its name comes primarily from a song title but noted a band name as well
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Wendy Swanson, a retired teacher from Portland, Oregon![]() |
Ben Chan, a philosophy professor from Green Bay, Wisconsin (3-day total: $69,001)![]() |
Hannah Wilson, a data scientist from Chicago, Illinois (8-day total: $229,801)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Today is a rare day in modern Jeopardy!; we have two returning co-champions today. Ben Chan could not defend his title on April 17, so he returns today. Unfortunately for him, his perfect record of having 3 runaways in 3 games is very much in jeopardy, as the returning champion is 8-time winner Hannah Wilson. The prediction model, which normally gives players of Ben and Hannah’s caliber more than a 70% chance of winning, have put Hannah and Ben in a 40-45% range apiece. (Poor Wendy Swanson, who was drawn to compete against both of these buzzsaws today.)
Episode 5 of Jeopardy! Masters airs tonight at 8:00 (7:00 Central) on ABC in the United States; in Canada, it will air on CTV2.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

November 1967 saw the first issue of famed music magazine Rolling Stone hit the streets. In his inaugural “Letter from the Editor”, co-founder Jann Wenner said that the magazine’s title was inspired by the Muddy Waters blues classic “Rollin’ Stone”, Bob Dylan’s 1965 hit “Like A Rolling Stone”; the band The Rolling Stones also took its name from the Waters song.

I like the way this week started out for me. “It’s easy if you know it.” I predict that Hannah and Ben will both get this one. Depending on what’s in Wendy’s music wheelhouse, it might even be a triple get—should make for some interesting wagering!
I was already thinking Rolling Stone before they even mentioned band name, but I was thinking ‘Papa was a Rolling Stone’
Would it have been legal for the contestant coordinators to wait until Hannah already lost to bring Ben back on?
If they did that, wouldn’t it be unfair for the person who had just won over Hannah?
They already accommodated Ben’s lack of availability for the week following his wins, and I thought that was a good thing. But it seems to me there should be reasonable limits to how far that accommodation should go.
Guess all these questions and what ifs didn’t really matter.
remind me…. why was ben not available to defend before ?
Unfortunately for Ben, after his 3-day run he tested positive for Covid (he said on Twitter it was a mild case, but it kept him quarantined and unable to travel).
So. like you tell Ben we can’t tell you exactly when you’ll be back but it will be when we have the next one day champion? Yeah, I can’t see that.
If I recall, Zach came back to face Brian on a Thursday. Perhaps Ben just got some back luck in the draw himself, but he would’ve at least had to face whoever is capable of beating Hannah if he played later in the week.
Sorry, MasterDoge, but that makes no sense in my opinion. Had Ben been able to continue in the normal course of events, he and Hannah would most likely have met anyway. They just would have met sooner and, then, Hannah just wouldn’t have gotten all those wins and would not have gotten an automatic bid for the Tournament of Champions. This way worked out much better for Hannah and Ben goes to the ToC (probably), too. There is now the possibility of a rematch of Ben and Hannah in the ToC. I can’t see any reason to hold Ben back from facing Hannah or Hannah from facing Ben, as was the case today.
Congratulations to Ben on a resounding victory today and to Hannah for her reasonably decent winning streak.
I think it’s a bit presumptuous (and unfair to the contestants who appeared throughout late March and April) to believe that Ben would have run off approximate 30 wins before Hannah’s appearance.
That was your takeaway from that? If so, I’m sorry that I wasn’t more clear. The point was that no matter whether you face someone who has won 8 games, 3 games, 1 game or none, you don’t get to choose your opponents. You have to play your schedule, no matter the opponent. In cards, you have to play the hand your dealt, not the one you want. I wasn’t really paying attention to how many episodes it has been since Ben last appeared. Sorry I wasn’t more clear the first time.
Triple Get for sure.
I didn’t want to comment this morning, but you called it!
Anytime I can get one like this so quickly should bode well for a tg.
And now to watch and wait for tonight’s Masters.
A music magazine and the year 1967 (rock era) quickly pointed me to Rolling Stone.
Seems easy to me, so being out in front is critical. This game should be all about the Daily Doubles. Ben and Hannah would not have seen each other play but should know each other’s win total and money won, so aggressive wagering should be in order. As for Wendy, that’s where there’s luck involved like any other game show.
Yes, I’d felt the only way this would not be a triple get was if it was only a double get because Ben & Hannah had fought it out so hard that one aggressively wagered too high on a late Daily Double and “went under” zero or that their buzzer speed had been so fast that Wendy had had to buzz in on very hard ones (which would have slowed them down a second) just in hopes she knew it, but then didn’t know it, so was left “under zero”.
I was expecting a more closer game, given how both Ben and Hannah are pretty dominant in their games. Alas, it’s just the way things go around here.
Holy ____. That’s all I have to say.
Holy moly I was not expecting the outcome to be as one sided as it was.
Agree.
I was thinking of Bob Dylan singing, ‘Like a rolling stone.”
At some point Hannah just looked stunned. The lack of competition to Ben in the sports category didn’t help and could’ve been aptly captured in the famous Ali over Liston II fight photo.
I played a fellow sports guy on my episode and had to split the category, unfortunately. This other Ben lived my dream.
Wow, what a game today! Shocking. Epic. Ben is truly a terrific player. Hannah just got smoked. So surprising. Today’s Final Jeopardy! question was a bit too easy, I think. 1967 + song title + rock band = Rolling Stone. For certain. I was around when the magazine came to be.
Jeopardy! even reaches the newspaper comics. Yesterday’s Crankshat featured Ed Crankshaft, and, his coffee buddies responding to an answer about Humphrey Bogart, as if they were on the Alex Trebec stage, with Mayim hosting.
Though Hannah “doesn’t really follow sports” she must’ve felt like the Bears facing ex-Packer quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who proclaimed once that he “owned” the Bears.
As for the Final Jeopardy, a song title that was the same as the name of a musical group, and, a magazine title? It HAD to be Rolling Stone. (I have to admit though, I didn’t know of the Muddy Waters version of Rolling Stone>)
this episode just shows you who you play and when matters
