Sam Buttrey, an associate professor at the Naval Postgraduate School from Pacific Grove, California (1 points)
Sam Buttrey on Jeopardy! Masters
Amy Schneider, a writer from Oakland, California (2 points)
Amy Schneider on Jeopardy! Masters
James Holzhauer, a self-described game show villain from Las Vegas, Nevada (3 points)
James Holzhauer on Jeopardy! Masters

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The conclusion of this episode will see us reach the one-quarter mark of the event; this match will feature James Holzhauer, Amy Schneider, and Sam Buttrey. I feel this is a perfect matchup for James to rebound after his defeat in last night’s game. Additionally, I’m a little bit worried for Amy at this point. There are holes in her strategy that James will absolutely exploit, and James is also strong enough on the signaling device that “be first and be correct” may not be able to overcome that.

One further note (and I’m putting this in the thread for both games: The next episode (Games 7&8) will be airing on Friday, May 12; ABC won’t be airing Jeopardy! Masters on Thursdays.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

8 Comments on "Jeopardy! Masters Recap – Wednesday, May 10, 2023 (Game 1)"

  1. I think this is where Amy’s confidence takes a massive turn for the worst à la Matt Amodio. Sam managed to consistently outplay her in last night’s game, and James has been handily beating everyone when it comes to buzzer timing and Daily Double finding – only Matt has been leading him when it comes to average attempts (49.5 to 48). As much as I love Amy, I’d be hard-pressed to imagine her making the semifinals if she doesn’t win tonight’s game.

    • Yeah, I think this game could be make-or-break more for Amy than for Sam. I think back to the state of play after the first two games of the ToC final, where Amy was being outplayed (“comprehensively,” in Andy’s opinion). There, she’d earned one win out of two; here, she has one point from a possible six. And from what I know of the taping schedule, an overnight break came after tonight’s episode (vice between games 2 & 3 of the ToC final). This is crunch time for her, no doubt,

two points I think, tied with Sam, who looked like he might contend for this game until James went on a big run. I was a little disappointed by Sam’s somewhat conservative wager on his DD.

And – RE: Sam – also just a bit surprised that he missed FJ! When I got it, I thought for sure he would and I’d have been even more dismayed at that DD bet.
          C’est la vie

  2. Just very sorry to see Amy doing so poorly compared to her stellar performance in the past. I don’t quite know what is going on.

    • Marianne:

One unfortunate reality about this level of Jeopardy! is that the margins between winning and losing can be mere milliseconds of timing on the signalling device. The most recent episode of the This Is Jeopardy! podcast has an interesting dive into the minutia of that aspect of the game.

The good news is that Amy is only 4 match point behind the leader, only 1 point out of 4th, and there are still 12 points available to her in this phase of the competition. There’s still plenty of time to make a comeback!

  3. I loved the ‘Good Name for a Breakfast Cereal’ category (and I have never liked breakfast cereal).

  4. I got a good chuckle when Dolemite was one of the answers in the game.
