This game’s Jeopardy! Masters contestants:
Matt Amodio, a postdoctoral researcher from Cambridge, Massachusetts (3 points)![]() |
Mattea Roach, a writer & podcaster from Toronto, Ontario, Canada (6 points)![]() |
James Holzhauer, a self-described game show villain from Las Vegas, Nevada (6 points)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Today’s second game sees Wednesday’s two winners, James Holzhauer and Mattea Roach, paired with Matt Amodio. Matt should have some confidence, having already beaten James in this tournament. James just took the lead for the first time in Masters, though, and will absolutely be looking to extend that advantage in this game.

As I said the last time “Gullivwe’s Travels” came up as a subject for Final Jeopardy, I’ve seen a few animated adaptations, but never the book that Guilliver adventures in Lilliput came from, mso this was a stumper for me.
Yes! Got the rebound! Helps to remember the “foreign” terms of the lands from Gulliver’s Travels.
I am so curious to know what the numbers 23678 (or 1122) mean to James as he usually (always?) has some association with his quirky bets. As well, whether 5958 (or 5642 or maybe even 158) means anything special to Mattea — perhaps she just wants to seem mysterious?
I would not be surprised it these are explained on Twitter, etc, but I don’t “do” social media.
With James having written a note even though he did not bet zero (and very likely DID know the answer) twice now, I am wondering if he would do so in any runaway game nowadays even if it was actual money. [Having already earned so much, I am guessing “yes”.]
As I recall from James’ original run, his bets sometimes refer to his wedding date or the birthdate of his daughter. Don’t know about Mattea’s bets.
Apparently 1,122 is the number of correct responses he had in his initial run.
