Both Cambridge and M.I.T. are locations of clones of the immensely famous apple tree that Isaac Newton sat under in the summer of 1666 when, as the story goes, an apple fell from a tree. From that observation, Newton first thought of his system of gravitation. Interestingly, Newton was in the 17th-century version of “work from home” when that occurred; the Great Plague of London and resulting pandemic sent all of the students home to slow the spread of that pandemic.

The tree at M.I.T. was a gift given by Ed Vetter, a former undersecretary at the U.S. Commerce Department, Vetter was given the gift by the National Bureau of Standards in 1977.

5 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, August 1, 2023"

  1. At the time of the original airing, I had never heard about the Cambridge and M.I.T. apple trees, I just quickly reasoned out what I thought would be a worthy possibility (“Newton’s apple tree”) and I turned out to be right.

I was really shocked that none of the three players thought of that.

  2. I too went with Molly’s guess of “roses”, but a specific one. I don’t know if this qualifies as a “Landmark Of Science”, but the clue elements “Clones of an original one of these” led me to think of “The rose of Hildesheim” (in Germany), also called the “Thousand-Year-Old Rose”. This is believed to be the oldest living rose in the world. I don’t know if anybody ever tried taking clones of it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone had. (And its flowers are pink, not red—the similarity to my name is just a coincidence!)

  3. My first thought was “pea plant,” referencing Gregor Mendel. But then I quickly switched to the idea of trees. That led me to “Isaac Newton’s apple tree” for my final answer. Yay!

How can I watch these shows? I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I don’t think my ABC station is running them!

    • They should be airing as normal. They are encore presentations, though, so it’s quite possible that your DVR isn’t recording them because they aren’t new. You may need to change your DVR settings to record all airings, not just new ones.
