Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, September 7, 2023

Note: This page contains spoilers for the September 7, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please also note that today’s game is an encore presentation of the game that originally aired on September 21, 2022.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Famous Names) for Thursday, September 7, 2023 (Season 39, Game 8):

Perhaps the most famous picture of him was taken in New Jersey in 1951 as he was annoyed by paparazzi on his 72nd birthday

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Martha Bath, a retired CPA from Seattle, Washington
Martha Bath on Jeopardy!
Christopher Pennant, a sports journalist from Chicago, Illinois
Christopher Pennant on Jeopardy!
Emmett Stanton, a freelance writer from Baltimore, Maryland (3-day total: $72,600)
Emmett Stanton on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

In his three wins thus far, 3-day champion Emmett Stanton has yet to lead going into Final Jeopardy—however, the win is counted after the round, and not before it. The Baltimore writer who has been dubbed “the comeback kid” by host Ken Jennings will face another stiff challenge today from retired CPA Martha Bath and sports journalist Christopher Pennant.

I am aware that this game does not match what is on the show’s website. However, it does match both my local TV listings, others’ TV listings, and game matches up with the “Clue of the Day” (this game’s third Daily Double) as published in the physical version of today’s New York Times. Thus, I have good reason to believe that we’ll be seeing this encore presentation from last September on our TV screens.

What happened to Luigi de Guzman? He lost in his sixth game.

The iconic photograph of Albert Einstein sticking out his tongue, as asked about in Final Jeopardy! on September 7, 2023.

The famous photograph is of famed physicist Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out; leaving Einstein’s 72nd birthday party in Princeton, New Jersey, the paparazzi descended on the car that Einstein was getting in. He stuck his tongue out at them briefly and turned away; Arthur Sasse got the photograph. Einstein ended up loving the photo so much that he asked for prints of it to go on greeting cards.

Game Recap & Tonight’s Game Stats:

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here’s the Thursday, September 7, 2023 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Lakes & Rivers; If It Quacks Like A Doc; Shoes!; Crossword Clues “J”; Great American Pairs; Budweiser & Sports)

Even though it was Martha who got to the Daily Double, it was Christopher who had the best time of things over the opening 30 clues, picking up 14 correct responses to hold the lead after Clue 30; Emmett was in a distant third.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Christopher 6 correct 0 incorrect
Martha 5 correct 1 incorrect
Emmett 4 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Martha was on the Art Fleming Jeopardy! 50 years ago.
Christopher has been announcing and coaching roller derby.
Emmett was a digital nomad.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Christopher 14 correct 2 incorrect
Martha 10 correct 1 incorrect
Emmett 5 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Christopher $6,800
Martha $5,600
Emmett $2,400

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Emperors; 2 Books In 1; People & Places; Belief Systems; Modern Westerns; 4 Consonants In A Row)

Double Jeopardy! saw the fireworks come out. First, Martha jumped into the lead with a $3,000 Daily Double bet, and then Emmett surprised everybody—Ken included—by successfully converting a $10,000 True Daily Double! Emmett led going into Final; Christopher’s total was harmed by a number of incorrect responses.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Emmett 12 correct 1 incorrect
Martha 16 correct 1 incorrect
Christopher 25 correct 6 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 4 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Emmett $22,000
Martha $15,400
Christopher $10,800

Martha was the only correct player, which made her today’s Jeopardy! champion! While this was her only win, I would expect to see her again at the conclusion of the strike in Champion’s Wildcard.

Tonight’s results:

Christopher $10,800 – $10,800 = $0 (Who is John XIII)
Martha $15,400 + $15,400 = $30,800 (Who is Einstein?) (1-day total: $30,800)
Emmett $22,000 – $10,000 = $12,000 (Who… is Winston Churchill?)

Andy’s Thoughts:

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Emmett $22,000 Martha $15,400 Christopher $10,800)

Emmett: Standard cover bet over Martha is $8,801. (Actual bet: $10,000)

Christopher: You can’t win unless you get Final correct and bet at least $2,400. (Actual bet: $10,800)

Martha: You can’t both cover Christopher and win a Double Stumper with Emmett. Either bet less than $2,199, or more than $6,201—though I’d recommend going all in if you do chose the cover route, just in case Emmett bets small. (Actual bet: $15,400)

2 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, September 7, 2023"

  1. This one may be easier now with the number of people who have seen “Oppenheimer” recently so they know that Einstein was at Princeton.

  2. Congrats to her! I was on Jeopardy in NYC in 1972 also. It was a great experience!
