(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2023 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Ian Fleming is best known today as an author; his most famous works include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as well as the James Bond novels, which inspired the multi-billion-dollar film franchise. Fleming relied on his personal experiences in the Naval Intelligence Division in World War II in order to write the Bond novels. Interestingly, the name Goldeneye—which inspired the name of the famous 1995 film in the Bond series—gets its name from Fleming’s home in Jamaica, which, in turn, got its name from the Operation Goldeneye intelligence campaign in Spain that Fleming spent most of his time on during the war.

(Categories: Bodies Of Water; As Credited On Their Imdb Page; Same First & Last Consonant; Beg; Borrow; Steel)

Today’s Double Jeopardy! round had three turning points. The first was when Cris bet $7,000 on his Daily Double. The second was when Pam only bet $4,000 of her $7,600 on hers. The third was when Cris picked up four consecutive $2,000 clues on clues #18 through #21 of the round, leading to a runaway at $29,800. Pam came up just $900 short of breaking the runaway and David was in a distant third.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Cris 22 correct 0 incorrect
Pam 16 correct 3 incorrect
David 15 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 6 (1 today).

Scores going into Final:

Cris $29,800
Pam $14,000
David $4,000

Cris having a runaway was crucial, as he was the only player to miss Final Jeopardy, which means he’s the victor of this one!

Tonight’s results:

David $4,000 + $3 = $4,003 (Who is Ian Fleming?)
Pam $14,000 + $13,995 = $27,995 (Who is Ian Fleming?)
Cris $29,800 – $221 = $29,579 (Who is Orwell) (1-day total: $29,579)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • As I always say, players underbet Daily Doubles and overbet Final Jeopardy. Today was another case of that. Certainly, this rings even larger in hindsight, as Cris went on a very significant run thanks to Pam’s underbetting of her Daily Double.
  • Today’s box score: September 8, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Cris $29,800 Pam $14,000 David $4,000)

David: Not much you can do today. Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $3)

Pam: Bet between $0 and $5,999 and you’re guaranteed second place. (Actual bet: $13,995)

Cris: Bet between $0 and $1,799 and enjoy the title of Jeopardy! champion! (Actual bet: $221)

6 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, September 8, 2023"

  1. Andy, I am really impressed by your “to go down a warren” pun. Not only is it mostly a play on what is usually said (rabbit hole) but also Pam’s last name AND is a callback both to a lot of discussion of ‘Watership Down’ early this season [December] and the first clue on the January 12, 2023 board. Plus ‘Rabbit Hole’ was a new Kiefer Sutherland film release in March.

  2. I am not clear if Lucas Partridge will be appearing as champion in the first game of the new season (that will use recycled clues) as I recall that (at least in general) the contestants for these shows were also going to be somewhat re-cycled [kind of an additional form of “second chance”]. Or am I just getting a whole lot of supposition that has occurred in the last few months mixed up with special tournaments(?) planned? But, regardless, will they be starting off with Lucas Partridge or not?

    • We won’t be seeing Lucas until well after the strike is resolved.

    • As far as I know, it’s the S37 Second Chance Competition, then some other tournament (S37/38 Champion’s Wildcard, I assume), then the originally intended postseason. Then, Lucas will be back. But I could be wrong.

      • Do you know whether the winner of either of these special “during the strikes” tournaments will qualify for inclusion in future regular tournaments? I’m just curious.

        • Each week’s winner from Second Chance advances to Champions Wildcard.

The number of players who will advance from Champions Wildcard to the ToC has yet to be announced.
