Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Awards & Honors) for Tuesday, October 24, 2023 (Season 40, Game 32):
As of 2023 the only 2 to win a Nobel Prize in Literature & an Academy Award were George Bernard Shaw & this singer-songwriter

Jilana Cotter, a senior data analyst from Dade City, Florida![]() |
Steve Crupi, a retired police information supervisor from Las Vegas, Nevada![]() |
Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:
It is Tuesday, and today is quarterfinal #3 of the Diamonds bracket of Fall 2023’s Champions Wildcard—this match is between February 2021 “giant killer” Steve Crupi (he ended Zach Newkirk’s run), December 2020 champ John Vigna, and recent Second Chance winner Jilana Cotter. Jilana was moved into the Diamonds bracket due to her pregnancy as there were concerns that having her tape in the fourth Champions Wildcard bracket would result in her flying too close to her due date.
I do think that Jilana having played most recently does make her a favorite in this match—however, John’s two games were almost polar opposites of each other. If the “$20,000 Coryat” John shows up to this one, I don’t think there’s much anyone can do about it.

I guess you could say “Things Have Changed” in the world of trivia! For years, it was a chestnut of a trivia question that George Bernard Shaw was the only person with both a Literature Nobel and an Academy Award; the 1925 Nobel Prize winner in Literature won his Oscar in 1939 after having adapted Pygmalion for the 1938 film version of the play. However, that changed in 2016 when Bob Dylan—who received an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2001 for the song “Things Have Changed” from the 2000 film Wonder Boys—was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.
For me, “Nobel Prize” + “singer-songwriter” leads me straight to the correct response—will our contestants be able to make the same jump on stage? Also, as I like to say, straightforward Final Jeopardy clues help keep Final Jeopardy betting as aggressive as it needs to be to make for exciting television.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- My only explanation for Jilana’s bet was that she made two separate math errors: firstly, it appears as though she doubled $9,600 to reach $18,200 and not $19,200; secondly, she then added a dollar instead of subtracted a dollar, coming up with $801 instead of $799.
- Today’s box score: October 24, 2023 Box Score.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Jilana $19,000 Steve $9,600 John $900)
Steve: Bet at least $9,200—but really, you might as well go all in. (Actual bet: $9,600)
Jilana: Standard cover bet over Steve is $201. (Actual bet: $801)
John: Bet whatever you like because there’s no difference between second and third—but if coming second really matters to you, I’d recommend betting $499 or less to stay ahead of Steve if he’s incorrect. (Actual bet: $898)

I was so surprised when I heard that Bob Dylan had won the Nobel Prize in Literature.. I thought that they wouldn’t have given it to a songwriter. But obviously I was wrong about that—which means that I was RIGHT about today’s Final!
I was not surprised as I bought a book of his at least 40 years ago that was of his lyrics to-date just printed like poems. I enjoyed reading them that way. Most were more like poems than many “poems” I see published today. I lost all my books and records in a house fire this decade. I hate that, but must admit that I would rather have my Bob Dylan records back than that book.
Hi RedRose, I am just the opposite. I knew for certain that Bob Dylan had won a Nobel Prize in Literature. I remember being upset & confused in 2016 that Dylan did not attend his Nobel ceremony in Sweden. I had wanted to watch him receive his award. Instead, he sent Patti Smith in his place. However, I did not know that Dylan had an Academy Award. So, I wasn’t sure about my answer for today’s Final!
Saw the clue, and thought, oh, yeah…that happened not too long ago…but couldn’t remember it was Bob Dylan.
I remembered Bob Dylan receiving the Nobel, and he was the only singer-songwriter I could come up with who had. I “assumed” he could also have won an Academy award.
Same here, but then I was surprised to find the Oscar was won in 2001. I would have expected it to be much earlier or somewhat more recent.
I love his songs (and his singing) so much that I think production companies are missing the boat by not selecting certain Bob Dylan songs and getting movies written based on them. However, I discovered that over 100 of his songs have been used in movies and was reminded of what I had forgotten, that Dylan wrote the soundtrack [10 songs] for the movie ‘Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid’ including “Knockin’ On Heavens Door”.
BTW,a connection exists between Bob Dylan and Jeopardy! — Sony bought his entire catalog less than 2 years ago.
I remember seeing Bob dylan getting that nobel as he was the only singer that I had in my head as well. His music soothes my soul. Many of his songs were in movies that were my childhood pasttimes.
I seem to vaguely recall the Nobel now… there’s no way I would have remembered it on my own. I knew nothing about him winning an Academy Award.
Nobel Prize and singer-songwriter led me instantly to Bob Dylan as he was the only one whose name I could think of that fit that description. I know there was another one but that was back in 1913 and I couldn’t think of his name. As I recall, that other winner was a poet from India. That was so long ago that I thought it might be too obscure for Jeopardy! considering Bob Dylan was so much more contemporary. For those who are wondering, the other singer-songwriter to win a Nobel prize was Rabindranath Tagore (I had to look it up).
Easy one for me. I got it quickly, because I recalled Bob Dylan being a Nobel laureate. Figured he had to have won an Oscar too, as he’s widely considered one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
Poor John was having another bad day. No signs of the $20,000 Coryat. I’m happy for Jiliana though – she was clearly having fun out there. And I like players who are having fun a lot more than gamebots.
This MAY haven a straightforwardmFinal Jeopardy, IF you could put he clues in the answer to come up with “who is Bob Dylan?” Unfortunatley for me I couldn’t.
Meh. A better / more interesting question would have been, “Who performed one of Bob Dylan’s songs and accepted his Nobel Prize for Literature in Stockholm in December 2016?”
This is about as much of a no-brainer Final for me as it can get. I own every album he’s ever made plus I’ve seen him 15 times dating back to 2001. (I know some people go to 15 shows a year, but throw me a bone here.)
