Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Famous Families) for Thursday, October 26, 2023 (Season 40, Game 34):

In 2020 a former U.S. ambassador to Ireland, the last of 9 siblings in this dynastic family, died at 92

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Tony Freitas, a director of product engineering from Claremont, California
Tony Freitas on Jeopardy!
Mason Maggio, a songwriter from Los Angeles, California
Mason Maggio on Jeopardy!
Yoshie Hill, a program support specialist from Colma, California
Yoshie Hill on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

Today is the day of quarterfinal #5 in the Diamonds bracket of Champions Wildcard; today’s players are Yoshie Hill, Mason Maggio, and Tony Frietas. Yoshie is probably best remembered for having played in Alex Trebek’s final episode—as I said in my preview last week, I would be absolutely shocked if Yoshie’s mid-game interview wasn’t about that specific point.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Yoshie said in her interview that she lost thanks to a dumb Final Jeopardy bet. I would very much disagree with that. Yoshie’s Final Jeopardy bet in the game she lost was perfectly fine. I took issue with her Daily Double bet in that game, but not her Final Jeopardy bet.
  • Tony very clearly said “Montgoflier” and not “Montgolfier”; the judges made the correct reversal. It should also be noted that going from a correct response to an incorrect one does necessitate the removal of twice the value of the clue.
  • Today’s box score: October 26, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Mason $7,600 Yoshie $5,600 Tony $2,400)

Yoshie: I would limit my bet to $799 or less to keep Tony locked out. (Actual bet: $5,600)

Mason: Standard cover bet over Yoshie is $3,601. (Actual bet: $3,601)

Tony: You need to bet at least $1,600 to pass Mason. (Actual bet: $2,400)

17 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, October 26, 2023"

  1. I thought of a dynastic family with many children, and came up with “What is Rockefeller?” (But I looked it up afterwards—five siblings instead of nine.) And I didn’t know that a Kennedy had been appointed Ambassador to Ireland—which makes more sense. So, no “Columbus” yesterday (although I did have a lot to say about “natives”), no “Kennedy” today. Drat!

    • Hi RedRose, Luckily, I guessed “The Kennedys” right out of the gate, today. I knew that there were 9 siblings of Irish heritage, and I remembered that Jean Kennedy Smith had been an ambassador to Ireland, at some point. My score is improving. Yay!

  2. Thinking Ireland, I thought large Catholic family, and guessed Kennedy. If I had to know it was Jean who died in 2020, I wouldn’t have had a clue.

  3. Michael Johnston | October 26, 2023 at 12:54 pm |

“dynastic” made me think of the Kennedys, and Ireland made me sure that was right.

  4. The kennedy dynasty and their irish descent got me to today’s answer. Still though I ahm happy that Yoshie and tony got this one.

  5. “Dynasty” plus “nine siblings” were the keys to me getting to “Kennedy.”

I think you meant to say “…absolutely shocked if Yoshie’s mid-game interview wasn’t about that specific point” in the Pregame Thoughts.

  6. Bill Vollmer | October 26, 2023 at 5:07 pm |

Once again, my mind didn’t understand a Final Jeopardy answer. Maybe if it had, the clues in the ansswer would have lead me to the Kennedys. We’ll never know.

  7. Very easy. Who else could be described as a “dynasty” other than the Kennedys? I can’t think of another American family like them. And the age checked out.

Speaking of taking issue with Daily Double bets, I didn’t like Mason going big here. He already had a massive lead and betting only $1000 could have cemented a runaway, which is what he was going for with the big bet. Him missing the clue let Yoshie and Tony get back into the game (at least until the reversal), which in turn cost him the win. That being the last DD meant that it would have taken a lot for either to catch up.

    • Robert J. Fawkes | October 26, 2023 at 6:39 pm |

My sentiments exactly both with regard to the Kennedy dynasty and your thoughts on Mason’s Daily Double wager. With the game in hand, he should have wagered conservativly. Dynastic family with a connection to Ireland, who else but the Kennedy clan?

  8. Why wasn’t “under wraps” in addition to “under hat” acceptable tonight

    • 1) “Wraps off” isn’t a thing (unlike what the correct response alludes to, “hats off”);
      2) Does “wraps” really fit a category titled FASHION STATEMENTS?

      • “Wraps” does fit the category titled FASHION STATEMENTS, but I totally agree that it doesn’t fit this clue.

  9. Joseph Kennedy – the patriarch- was ambassador to Ireland (I thought), didn’t remember about Jean.

  10. Odd coincidence: contestant Tony is actually one of nine siblings himself! Not a Kennedy, though. 🙂
