Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The 1500s) for Tuesday, October 3, 2023 (Season 40, Game 17):
In the early 1500s he produced a codex in words & pictures on the flight of birds, one of many subjects that interested him
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Greg Marrero, a school administrator from Huntington Beach, California![]() |
Katrina Hill, a program officer from Alexandria, Virginia![]() |
Lawrence Long, a nursing student & stay-at-home uncle from East Bend, North Carolina![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
On yesterday’s show, Dane Reighard qualified for the semifinals after a Triple Stumper Final Jeopardy clue. Lawrence Long, Katrina Hill, and Greg Marrero return today to the Alex Trebek Stage. Lawrence went viral during his initial appearances, thanks to being introduced as a stay-at-home uncle. In my preview this weekend, I mentioned that this is a game where anything could happen, especially because the strength of her opposition may cloud Katrina’s stats and skill level—she lost in her first title defense to 5-time champion Luigi de Guzman.
One thing to keep in mind this week, especially if you’re in Chicago, but this also could be the case in some other Central Time Zone markets if your local Jeopardy! station is an ABC affiliate: ABC coverage of MLB playoffs is happening today, tomorrow and Thursday, and will very likely preempt Jeopardy!; I hope the new MLB pitch clock rules mean that it would take significant extra innings for the game to run long enough to preempt the show in the Eastern time zone.
Also, in news from the world of Jeopardy!—congratulations to Amy Schneider, whose first book, In the Form of a Question: The Joys and Rewards of a Curious Life, releases today. You can find my review of the book here.

Leonardo da Vinci produced Codex on the Flight of Birds in 1505–1506 as part of his interest in human mechanical flight. This contained more than 35,000 words and 500 pictures and sketches of the flight of birds and potential prototypes of flying machines. While the work introduced concepts that would turn into viable human flight, the Wright Brothers took nearly four centuries to successfully fly a plane.

Clue #8 proved to be the turning point of this one; Lawrence doubled his score on a Daily Double! Finding the third one a few clues later took any chance of a comeback away from Greg and Katrina. Lawrence had a runaway going into Final!

Katrina 13 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Tonight’s results:
Katrina $6,400 – $116 = $6,284 (What is Albert, you’re a rea)
Greg $8,600 + $8,599 = $17,199 (Who Leonardo Da Vinci)

A wildcard baseball game is on this afternoon, so no Jeopardy in the Chicago area. It is supposed to be streaming if people have that.
Which adds insult to injury, if you happen to be both a Jeopardy fan and a Cubs fan. 😀
I don’t if Jeopardy streamed on ABC7 Chicago’s “digital subchannel” but it did air around 3a Wednesday on the main channel, and, will at least for Wednesday’s Jeopardy, and, possibly Thursday as well IF an MLB Wild Card playoff series goes to three games.
I got Leonardo da Vinci right away. 1500s, many interests, both scientific and artistic (words and pictures)—who else could it be? To me, this seemed like an “easy” Final; but, I have been surprised before. (I wish I had seen Ken do the human pyramid, but not even for that would I get up in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, when the Monday show airs here in the New York area.)
Yeah, for me it seemed the most obvious. The time period, his interest in birds/flight and maybe even subliminally, having the word ‘code’ in codex and having read Dan Brown’s book back in 2006, it was the only answer I had.
Yeah, the Codex is kind of a gimme.
Hi RedRose,
Here’s a copy of the human pyramid video.
https://youtu.be/ot_P8crvH0Q?si=kSx1oLGt2em22kqa
Thanks for the video, Gary! It’s amazing that Ken would do that—he’s a trouper.
Hi RedRose, Thank you again for your most-recent comment to me. I did go back & read it. I, too, got Leonardo da Vinci rather quickly. I also briefly thought about St. Francis of Assisi, but he was around about 300 years too early to fit the clue. Judith P.
I also got Leo Da Vinci because of the code and the interest of flight and birds he pursued. He painted the Mona Lisa as well.
I really wish these tournaments were in the normal 2 week format. Something about the typical 4 wild card semi finalist spots appeal to me. I like the strategy in wagering for those wild card spots.
Wildcards also helped if you were playing against someone with a hot hand as long as you got at least a decent score yourself. But this is already a wildcard tournament so guess they didn’t think they needed wildcards for the wildcards. 🙂
Second chance, wild card, second chance winners in wild card, TOC with wild card winners in it and potentially second chance winners too… it’s a bit much to keep up with lol
The mention of baseball, and the pitch clock rule, reminds me of what you said upon the approval of most^ of the changes to the Major League Baseball playing rules on September 9, 2022:
With a full season of operation of those rules now behind us, do you stand by that characterization?
This is indeed otherwise related to Jeopardy!; the take you expressed a little over a year ago could squarely fall within the territory of “outdated viewpoints on how the [sport] should run in the 2020s.”
^ (the “runner on second in extra innings in the regular season” was not made permanent at this time)
With all due respect, I certainly am not the first person to post something on the Internet that has aged poorly, and I certainly won’t be the last.
Indeed — and neither will I be the last such person. To put a more complimentary spin on it, the experience of MLB informs your view that like it, Jeopardy! needs to be forward looking and meet potential fans where they are while preserving much about what has traditionally made it great.
I was thinking of baseball as well over the weekend, in terms of regular season vs. playoffs. There are probably some baseball fans who look back wistfully on thirty years ago, and recall 1993 as the year that had the “last true pennant races.” (Even Bob Costas did several years later.) And there are those who would point out that the San Francisco Giants won 103 games that year and didn’t qualify for the postseason — would such a state of affairs really be acceptable in 2023?
When the Final Jeopardy clue was displayed, I thought of DaVinci, and, thought I was wrong. Was absolutley pleasantly flabergasted when it was revealed to be the correct response.
I don’t know how Wednesday’s Celebrity Jeopardy will go (or, Celebrity Wheel for that matter,) but following Celebrity Wheel on most ABC stations will be the $100,000 Pyramid, with Rosie O’Donnel has one of the celebrity partners. Her games are usually well played, to go with her humor. If you’ve never watched Rosie as a game player, watch Pyramid, and, see.
Andy, I could go to IMDB to see for myself, but has Rosie ever done Jeopardy? If she never has been invited, the Jeopardy producers should look at her appearances on shows like Pyramid, see what kind of competitor she is, and, invite her.
IMDb’s latest format makes it more difficult to find “self” appearances than it used to be, but it shows that she was on Celebrity Jeopardy in 1992 and 1999. She has been on several game shows besides J! and 9 appearances between old & new Pyramid prior to the latest appearance. I agree that it is time she was back on this new version of Celebrity Jeopardy! with the Triple Jeopardy board.
Does anyone know if/when new contestants are being selected and if Jeopardy plans to extend the selection process of qualified candidates to account for time lost due to strike. I was told back in March to hope for a call within 18 months.
The show said on Inside Jeopardy that everyone in the pool would have their eligibility extended six months due to the strike.
(Admin note: I have elected to redact the name of the person making this request, as the producers do read this site, and while this is a very valid question, I wouldn’t want your asking to have an effect on your chances.)
