Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Name’s The Same) for Tuesday, October 31, 2023 (Season 40, Game 37):
This first name is shared by a character introduced in 1941 & a member of royalty who is sixth in line to the British throne
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Katie Hargrove, a professional organizer from Redondo Beach, California![]() |
Hari Parameswaran, a hardware engineer from Cupertino, California![]() |
Aaron Craig, an attorney originally from Toronto, Ontario, Canada![]() |
Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:
Happy Hallowe’en! Today is Quarterfinal #8 of the Champions Wildcard Diamonds bracket, and our returning players are Katie Hargrove, Hari Parameswaran, and Aaron Craig. You might recognize Hari from winning the Second Chance Competition in the opening week of Season 40.
After seeing how well Jilana Cotter played last week in her quarterfinal, I think that Hari has to be considered the favorite in this quarterfinal—presuming that Hari’s buzzer timing is like it was at the end of the Second Chance final. It seems there is a tiny advantage to playing more recently (though certainly, any evidence here would be anecdotal; I don’t know if there is any way of quantifying this).

Prince Archie of Sussex, the son of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was born on May 6, 2019 and is the first son of Harry and Meghan. Archie is currently sixth in the line of succession, but could be moved further down the line if William, Prince of Wales and Catherine, Princess of Wales have a fourth child.
The other Archie referred to in the clue is the famed comics character Archie Andrews, created by John L. Goldwater and Bob Montana, who first appeared in Pep Comics 22 (December 1941). The character is probably best known recently as being one of the major characters in the CW TV series Riverdale, which recently concluded a 7-season run. KJ Apa portrayed Archie in this series.
I don’t necessarily think this one will be as straightforward as some of the Final Jeopardy clues we’ve seen over the past couple of weeks, but I could also see any result in this Final, from a Triple Stumper to a triple get.

I didn’t think I was going to get this one, but I remembered that when Prince Archie was born, there was a lot of talk comparing his name to that of the comics character, so my guess was in fact “Who is Archie?” As Andy said, this one could go any way. I’ll be interested to see the outcome.
Hi RedRose, I’m a day late & a dollar short! I’m behind in watching daytime Jeopardy! this week. I have the shows recorded, though. Regarding this Final! clue – I immediately thought of “Curious George.” The children’s book was published in 1941. So, I connected that thread to little Prince George, William & Kate’s son. I knew that Prince George is 3rd in line to the British throne, after his grandpa King Charles & Prince William, his dad. I just couldn’t think of which prince was 6th in line, with only 30 seconds to spare. Congrats on your correct choice today.
Knowing Will and Kate have three children, so their youngest would be fourth in line, Harry would be fifth…and Archie sixth. When Archie was first ‘announced’ I thought for sure his name must really be Archibald.
That’s exactly how I came to the answer, working my way down the succession. As long as someone knows that and doesn’t worry too much about the other half of the clue, they should get it. That’s what I think, anyhow.
Agreed. Forget about 1941, and you should be able to work out the succession in less than thirty seconds.
Katerina. and. Gregory were right, simply because if one knows the line of succession to the British throne, you had this. (There were how many famous characters introduced in 1941?)
Unfortunately I do not know the line of succession to the British throne (and, most certainly didn’t know Archie and his gang debuted in 1941.)
Andy, bit of business I’m curious about, when did Jeopardy (as an example of US game shows, start including the name of Canadian provences, when introducing Canadian players? (example Aaron Craig, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.) Maybe it’s a faulty memory, but it seemed to me for the longest time, it would have been Aaron Craig, Toronto, Canada.
It’s consistently been “Toronto, Ontario, Canada” for the past decade. Before then, there was no rhyme or reason, and it could even change mid-season.
Dang, missed it they hit me with a couple of weaknesses, line of succession and non-superhero Archie comics :p I had no idea those comics were that old!
I was off by 3 in the line of succession, and 12 years on the character. I went with Charlotte (of Web fame).
Logical reasoning – a royal and a character. And only 11 years off on the character – Charlotte’s Web was published in 1952.
The name prince Archie reminded me of the comic character in the newspaper comic. Though I am not having a huge knowledge of Royalty this is my weak spot
Like you and Aaron, ‘Charlotte’ immediately came to my mind because of ‘Charlotte’s Web’, as her name sticks out among the other names too bland to likely be a “character”, but I quickly realized that wasn’t far enough down and that 6th would be Archie.
With the change to allowing females in the line of succession (and William having 3 kids and Harry two), it’s easy and quick to count down to 7th, but I would be at a loss to go further than that. I was really surprised that NONE of them got it. I wonder if they forgot the “includes girls now” or maybe were thinking that little kids don’t qualify until they reach 18 or maybe 21?
Just a point of clarification: females have always been in the line of succession. The change made a few years ago was to place them in line in accordance with their birth order, not behind younger brothers from the same line; thus, Charlotte is third, ahead of Louis and not behind.
Right, thanks, I knew that, I just was thinking in terms of consecutively and did not realize that I made it sound like they would be skipped entirely.
For the same reason I immediately thought Charlotte, but then I counted down and said, “no, she’s higher than that.” But then I drew a blank on the names of either of Harry and Meghan’s children. Another clue against: I think mentioning that a character was “introduced in 1941” implies a recurrence, as in a series. Even if there had been sequels to “Charlotte’s Web,” they would not have included Charlotte.
I see where you are coming from, but I don’t think “introduce” implies that. For example, when there is a movie put out with a main (not even necessarily THE main) character that is a child played by a child that has never acted on TV or in a movie before, in the credits it will say “introducing so-and-so as whoever” even if the child never acts again (which at that point they would not know whether that would happen or not).
I was thinking Jughead but was off a bit
Happy Halloween, y’all!
I thought dressing up as 1980’s Alex Trebek would make my brain work better, and make this clue easier… turns out, it doesn’t work like that!
I am confused as to why Hari was even in this competition. Given that he won the Second Chance Competition in the opening week of Season 40, doesn’t that place him in the regular Tournament of Champions. If so, why would he need to compete again in this Champions Wildcard from Seasons 37 and 38? Can Andy or someone else explain this to me. Thanks for any comments as I’m genuinely confused about this.
On the other hand, there was no confusion on today’s FJ. The question is just who is sixth in the line of succession. The birth of Arhie and the news surrounding it were recent enough for me to remember that Archie is now sixth.
Second Chance winners going forward are advancing to Champions Wildcard and not directly to the ToC.
and @ Robert J. Fawkes, Hari was a competitor in Season 37 and played in that 2nd Chance during the 1st week of Season 40. Had there not been a writer’s strike, we would have led off the season with a ToC from Season 39. Jeopardy had to come up with some new and inventive ideas to keep the show going.
I know these are re-used clues and all, but as far as I can tell, Seth Meyers hasn’t done “This Week in Numbers” since 2015.
And Jay Leno retired even before that with his Jaywalking
I think this is a generation thing. I am 84 . Nmae of a character introduced in 1941 with the same name as the royal 6th in line to the crown, immediately gave me Archie. We read the comics regularly as a kid
So, you noticed at the age of two when the Archie comics hit the market? Just kidding!
