Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, November 24, 2023

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the November 24, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Business) for Friday, November 24, 2023 (Season 40, Game 55):

This company announced “On September 29th, 2023, we will send out the last red envelope”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Dennis Chase, a biotech project manager from Palm Springs, California
Dennis Chase on Jeopardy!
Danielle Maurer, a digital marketing manager from Peachtree Corners, Georgia
Danielle Maurer on Jeopardy!
Fred Nelson, a university professor from Fresno, California
Fred Nelson on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today is the final semifinal of the Clubs bracket of Fall 2023’s Champions Wildcard; this one is between Fred Nelson, Danielle Maurer, and Dennis Chase! This is a matchup between three exciting players. Dennis did lead our three players in attempts in the quarters, but also gave six incorrect responses. This one is an extremely difficult semifinal to predict a winner for; this is the sort of matchup where nobody would win more than three if you played it seven times.

In other holiday news, I hope your Thanksgiving was excellent! Do note that today’s game will be pre-empted in significantly more markets than yesterday’s game was. Please check your local listings! In an important note, today’s game will also be airing earlier than usual in some markets—even in the morning in some areas—and results will be posted here earlier than usual.

Well, if there was any question as to whether or not the writers were inserting new material into games post-strike, it’s safe to say that today’s Final Jeopardy clue answers that question!

Needless to say, for those viewers who were unaware of the history of Netflix prior to becoming the streaming behemoth that it became, it originally began in March 1998 as an online DVD rental service—the first DVD shipped was Beetlejuice. According to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, “those iconic red envelopes changed the way people watched shows and movies at home”.

This should be a relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy for our players—maybe less so for the home viewer who isn’t as online as our players might be.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Tips From The Ancients; Famous Gingers; Sign O’ The Times; In Explicable; I’d Like A Drink; It’s The Cockatiel Hour)

In the second straight day with 0 incorrect responses in the opening round, Dennis had the best time on the signalling device early, but a rebounded $1000 incorrect response meant things were still very close at the interviews. However, it was Danielle who found the round’s Daily Double, and she used that to help propel herself into the lead at the midway point!

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Dennis 9 correct 1 incorrect
Fred 4 correct 0 incorrect
Danielle 2 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Dennis held the buzzer in the only way that wasn’t painful for him.
Danielle practices on a buzzer that makes clown noises.
Fred used to use a “light saber grip” on the buzzer but has changed his ways.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Danielle 8 correct 0 incorrect
Dennis 14 correct 1 incorrect
Fred 8 correct 0 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Dennis $6,200
Fred $4,800

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Nashville, Geographic; Fictional Movie Bands; Possessive Book Titles; An American In Paris; Chess; “A”djectives)

Dennis eventually got to the second Daily Double, and pulled out a big lead with a good-sized bet. Unfortunately, his hunting for the last one was lacking, and it fell into Danielle’s hands. While Danielle’s bet was a little small for the situation, it was enough to keep Dennis from having a runaway going into Final!

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Dennis 28 correct 1 incorrect
Danielle 15 correct 0 incorrect
Fred 13 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Dennis $30,600
Danielle $16,800
Fred $8,400

Final Jeopardy today was a triple get — Dennis is now a finalist!

Tonight’s results:

Fred $8,400 + $8,400 = $16,800 (What is Netflix?)
Danielle $16,800 + $16,800 = $33,600 (What is Netflix?)
Dennis $30,600 + $3,003 = $33,603 (What is Netflix?) (Finalist)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Thanks to Matt Carberry, whose work compiling the changes in airtimes this week was invaluable for knowing who was airing the show when.
  • These semifinals were all so good that the show had enough time to do a full credits roll for all three semifinals.
  • A bet of $10,000 or more would have guaranteed that Danielle was within two-thirds of Dennis going into Final Jeopardy (with a correct response, of course.)
  • Today’s box score: November 24, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Dennis $30,600 Danielle $16,800 Fred $8,400)

Fred: If second place really matters (though there’s no difference in prize money here), limit your bet to $2,399 or less. (Actual bet: $8,400)

Danielle: Bet at least $10,800 to have any chance of winning. (Actual bet: $16,800)

Dennis: Standard cover bet over Danielle is $3,001. (Actual bet: $3,003)

  1. I remember the early days of Netflix and coming home to finding I had a movie to watch and staying up late to watch just so I could get it into the mail the next day and get another. So, yeah, for me, this was a no brainer since I also remember the announcement.

  2. I think that this was the easiest FJ ever. SInce this event just happened this year, I would hope that this would be a Triple Get. If not, I would wonder. I will miss those red envelopes as well, receiving a movie, then watching it, then returning the envelope and eventually receiving another red envelope with another movie.

By the way, I do not live too far from the main Headquarters in Los Gatos, CA. I drive righy by it from time to time.

    • You live in a beautiful area, Thomas G. I passed through ‘the city of cats’ on the way to the starting line of the Skyline to the Sea Marathon (which I recommend highly).

  3. I did not think the results would show up this early, but I am happy to see that Dennis won todays’ game by $3. And that it was a triple get.

  4. This was a good final as I also got netflix but I barely use it But this one was definitely a no brainer for sure. Happy to see a triple solve today. Congrats to Danny making it to the finals

I didn’t get it. That whole concept was alien to me twenty years ago, and there was no way I was going to make the association with the company now 😕

  6. Robert J. Fawkes | November 24, 2023 at 6:37 pm |

This one was so recent (less than two months ago) that I didn’t see anyone missing it. Not sure when this episode was recorded but the event was even more recent at that time. As soon as I read the clue, I thought that whoever was in the lead at the end of Double Jeopardy! was going to be the winner of the game. Had to be a triple get.

  7. I blurted something out quick at my TV and instantly realized I was wrong and then went right to Netflix. I’ve never been a subscriber to Netflix, but all of a sudden my brain remembered the announcement.

2 for 5 on FJ this week.

    As for the final….

I’ll go with Dennis Chase for this lead going into FJ on Monday…..$15,800 to $11,200 (Jen) to $9300 (Nick) and who knows what they’ll bet in FJ, since it’s a 2 game Final.

I really wish Jeopardy would release the 9 matchups of the Hearts bracket now. It harms nothing about what’s going on now and lets us get a leg up on what will be happening in the next bracket. Unfortunately, they’ll probably make us wait until after the Final on Tuesday night. Ugh. 🙁

    • I am curious as to what your first thought was. I immediately went to Netflix (and stuck with it for my response), but nearly instantaneously thought about the company NAMED RedEnvelope and the Chinese practice of giving monetary gifts in red envelopes (though I would not have been able to come up with a reasonable response pertaining to the latter one).

I was a longtime Netflix DVD customer, but had dropped it about a year ago because their turnaround time had gotten so bad. [I had the “two at once” level and yet was only managing to receive three within each two week period. Also, for years if I had had an upcoming new release at the top of my list, I would receive it in the mail ON its release date, but since about 2018 I was lucky to receive a “new release” within 3 months after its release date.]

      • Hi Lisa! Thanks for the reply and I so wish I could remember what I blurted out at first. LOL Short term memory I guess. Must have been pretty atrocious, huh? 😉

  8. Hello, Andy—when you delete a comment, I wish there were some way you could tell the person what the problem was, so that they don’t repeat the error.

    • I understand your concern; however, there are words or phrases that do trigger automatic deletion of comments—notably including the names of locations where where bootleg copies of episodes tend to appear.

  9. Thanks, Andy. I didn’t know that those were bootleg. From now on, I won’t watch them there.

This Final Jeopardy was straightforward IF you were one who recieved DVDs by mail in those red envelopes, and/or, you were aware of the announcement about ending the service. I was both (a former DVD by mail subscriber, and, had read about the announcement,) so naturally I got this Final Jeopardy right.
