Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category British Cities) for Monday, November 27, 2023 (Season 40, Game 56):
Over the motto “Fortis est Veritas”, the coat of arms of this city features a beast of burden crossing over some water
(correct response beneath the contestants)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Another group of 27 players is down to 3; one of these three players will be this bracket’s representative in this winter’s Tournament of Champions! As I said in my finals preview, I think Dennis is the best player in this final; he’s been strong on the signaling device. However, Dennis has had a slight tendency to let opponents back into games (either by giving too many incorrect responses in the quarterfinal or not hunting enough for the Daily Doubles in the semis). This could make for a very interesting final, especially because Jen is not afraid to make incredibly aggressive bets. Additionally, you can’t count Nick out of this—his social media presence during this competition has certainly been seen by some longtime fans as a sign that Nick would perform well!
Today’s game is a two-game total-point final; today’s final scores are added to tomorrow’s to determine the overall winner!

Correct response: What is Oxford?

The coat of arms of the famous British university town, Oxford, features a visual pun—an ox (a beast of burden) fording the water (crossing over some water—likely representing the Thames, considering the local geography).
The motto “Fortis est Veritas”—meaning “the truth is strong”—might be able to point players towards a city of higher learning. However, I would say that the best way of getting to the correct response to this one would be to focus on “What words are the writers taking great pains to avoid saying here?”—a useful tool sometimes when trying to figure out the correct answer to a trivia question whose correct answer isn’t readily apparent to you.

I guessed Newcastle located on the River Tyne’s
I thought of Cambridge – focusing on crossing the water = bridge and not on beast of burden. At least I got the higher learning portion.
Well played, writers😒 I was unable to put the hints together and could not come up with a guess.
The only reason I came up with the correct response is because we had spent a few nights there back in 2017 on a trip to England, and later I looked up the history of why the town is named what it is. We stayed at St Hugh’s College in “tourist” rooms. Many of the Oxford Colleges offered them, and the practice seems to have begun again, there and elsewhere across the UK, as COVID wanes.
I managed to get Oxford as there is a course covering grammar based on the University in Oxford. A trip to Oxford england will be great for us
I immediately got the pun “beast of burden”=“ox” + “crossing over some water”=“ford”. I’m surprised it wasn’t as easy as this for some.
Unfortunately, I focused on the motto, instead of the devices on the sheild.
As Andy mentioned in his more information, if one figured out that the “beast of burden” was an Ox, ford, crossing water, should follow. giving you Oxford. Nick apparantly got it-too late.
“I’ll never be,
Your beast of burden.”
Was thinking donkey at first, but then switched to cow, then ox, and we’re looking for an obvious answer so, Oxford!
When that song first began airing, I couldn’t figure out what they were talking about concerning “pizza burning”.
What is “effective lead” I thought I had a pretty good cushion going into Day Two
Basically, your “effective lead” is 50% of your actual Day 1 lead. It’s because anything earned during play on Day 2 can be doubled in Final Jeopardy. Thus, if Jen is $1850 (or more) ahead of you going into Final, she has the advantage. (“Advantage” being “wins if everyone gets Final correct and bets sufficiently”.)
In short, it’s half of what your lead today is, since everything gained tomorrow can be doubled in Final.
Because you have an effective lead of $1,850 over Jen today, as long as the scores tomorrow see her ahead of you by less than that going into Final, you can still finish with the highest cumulative score of the two of you. If her lead is $1,851 or more, however, she has the most control over her own destiny. (If her lead over you is $1,850 exactly, then that just means you’re probably gonna go through a tiebreaker.)
Same situation with Dennis. If the scores tomorrow see him leading you by less than $3,150 going into Final, you can finish with the highest cumulative score of the two of you. Anything more than that means Dennis is most in control of his own destiny, and $3,150 exactly means a tiebreaker is extremely likely.
I hope my (and Andy’s) comments clear that up; best of retroactive luck tomorrow and in the ToC, if that is to occur!
Good luck tomorrow Nick! Should be fun to watch, though you know a little secret that we don’t. 😉
Well, I didn’t get the FJ right. Though I was thinking of the Rolling Stones song and now have a better understanding of it.
Should be fun tomorrow!
