Gary Hollis (18) Roanoke, Virginia ![]() 61 correct, 12 incorrect 7/8 on rebound attempts (on 19 rebound opportunities) 33.33% in first on buzzer (57/171) 5/5 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $9,000) 1/3 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $16,667 |
|
Julia Markham Cameron (16) Brooklyn, New York ![]() 82 correct, 12 incorrect 6/8 on rebound attempts (on 15 rebound opportunities) 35.11% in first on buzzer (79/225) 1/3 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $0) 2/4 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $15,150 |
|
Henry Baer (7) San Francisco, California ![]() 72 correct, 8 incorrect 5/5 on rebound attempts (on 20 rebound opportunities) 27.19% in first on buzzer (62/228) 7/9 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $10,600) 2/4 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $14,850 |
Overall Thoughts: Gary was the latest in a long line of very strong players from the 2021 Professors Tournament, though I also think that a lot of fans are going to be cheering for Julia in this one. It’s certainly within the realm of possibility for Julia or Henry to take a victory in this one, especially if Gary’s conservative Daily Double bets don’t lead to a runaway situation.

Tyler Vandenberg (13) Stuttgart, Germany ![]() 80 correct, 10 incorrect 7/7 on rebound attempts (on 18 rebound opportunities) 31.14% in first on buzzer (71/228) 6/8 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $13,200) 2/4 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $15,150 |
|
Emma Saltzberg (5) Brooklyn, New York ![]() 100 correct, 14 incorrect 8/9 on rebound attempts (on 25 rebound opportunities) 32.75% in first on buzzer (93/284) 6/7 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $9,400) 2/5 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $15,800 |
|
Ed Coulson (14) Dana Point, California ![]() 78 correct, 10 incorrect 5/6 on rebound attempts (on 14 rebound opportunities) 32.02% in first on buzzer (73/228) 4/5 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $8,500) 2/4 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $15,750 |
Overall Thoughts: On Inside Jeopardy, Sarah noted that before going into the regular play stream and winning games there, Ed was the alternate for the 2021 Professors Tournament. Meanwhile, all three players have very similar stats, though I suspect that Tyler’s willingness to bet big on Daily Doubles may prove to be the difference in this one.

|
Yungsheng Wang (1) Lafayette, Louisiana ![]() 99 correct, 17 incorrect 6/7 on rebound attempts (on 23 rebound opportunities) 34.74% in first on buzzer (99/285) 5/5 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $14,899) 4/5 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $14,640 |

Overall Thoughts: I would consider this to be the “fireworks” semifinal—I said exactly the same thing about Andrew’s quarterfinal as well. I think it’s safe to say that this one is very likely coming down to Final Jeopardy.

I don’t remember how the quarterfinals went for me, but here are my predictions!
Match #1: Gary – This is the only matchup where I feel that there’s a real clear-cut answer as to who’s the most likely to win. I think he’s the strongest player in every aspect of the game, other than Daily Double hunting (which might be especially difficult, given Henry’s propensity to find Daily Doubles rather early). I like his chances here, but he might have to go more aggressive in the finals if he wants a ToC spot.
Match #2: Tyler – I agree with pretty much everything you said in the overall thoughts. While I ultimately feel like this will be a very close match, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tyler’s aggressive gameplay carry him to a finals berth.
Match #3: Andrew – Despite Andrew having been put up against machines in both games he’s played so far, I think he’s ultimately a slight favorite because of how well he played his quarterfinal against two otherwise dominant champions. His quarterfinal seemed to be a “shake off the rust” match, and if that holds true, he’s gonna be unstoppable. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see Garrett win this, either, and Yungsheng just always seems to find a way to win!
Looking forward to these matchups, once again! I think the winner of match 3 will be the favorite to advance to the ToC, but that’s why they actually play the games!
Semifinals Predictions:
Game 1 – Julia Markham Cameron
Game 2 – Tyler Vandenberg
Game 3 – Yungsheng Wang
