The Goshute, an indigenous people of the Utah area, called the Great Salt Lake “Teittse Paa”, meaning “bad water” or “fish water”, due to its saltiness. The Great Salt Lake is “endorheic”, meaning it retains water and does not outflow to an ocean; the evaporation of water containing minerals leaves behind the salt.

I was way off. I guessed “What is the Atchafalaya Swamp?” It goes as far west as Texas, it is “bad water”; but it seems I was overthinking—the right answer is so much more obvious.
It was obviously not Badwater, Death Valley, but leading me to think of Badwater led me to thinking of salt flats, which led me to Utah and the Great Salt Lake. All in about three seconds.
As an alumni of the local University, whose team name is a different but similarly named indigenous people (My memory is fuzzy on exactly how closely related the indigenous peoples are to each other, but the similarity of the names always kept them close to each other in my mind), and the familiarity with the body of water that comes from living there for 22 years, this one was a gimme for me. That being said, I can easily see it being tougher for anyone without those connections.
Drats! Wish I had bet more! I blurted out the question before I finished reading the answer. But, alas, I had little confidence in my knowledge of the category.
Hm… second sylabble, “Western”, vast body, “bad water”. That’s a lot of hints. But I won’t pull the trigger and predict a triple get. Too many ways to go wrong 😕
Bad water the western us state and vast body yes it pointed me to the great salt lake in Utah. Still the keywords in that clue are worthy of getting it.
I made a very tiettse guess on this one
Though not familar with the Goshute people, the answers keywords “western,” and, “Bad Water,” gave me “What is Salt Lake?” Would Salt Lake, without the term “Great” been accepted?
IMHO just ‘Salt Lake’ should NOT be sufficient. There are lots of salt lakes in the world and if one does not know what language the words ‘Goshute’ and ‘Teittse Paa’ are (and does not make the assumption that ‘Western’ always means “western U.S.A.” in Jeopardy!), then ‘Salt Lake’ could be any of them. [A few are in the western part of their country or region and Lake Eyre salt lake (also a vast one) is in Australia which is considered to be a ‘Western World’ country and of its 500 separate Aboriginal languages, I suppose some of them COULD have words that sound at least somewhat like ‘Goshute’ and ‘Teittse Paa’. In fact, there are “foreign languages” spoken near a large percentage of the world’s salt lakes. Also, the Sambhar Salt Lake is west of Jaipur.]
On the other hand, ‘Great Salt Lake’ immediately came to my mind to the degree I thought no more about it until finding out if that was correct.
Lisa, with your reasoning, I can see where “What is Salt Lake?” would NOT have been accepted. From what you say “the Great Salt Lake” is it’s proper name, referring to the one in Utah. So since the answer called for a specific place, it’s proper name was what was needed. Standard Jeopardy proceedure.
I had zero clue! Just couldn’t come up with anything. A lot of abbreviating the clue titles tonight. Maybe I’ll do better at FJ when I go watch 3 tapings next Tuesday. I’ll be happy if I know 1 of the 3. 🙂
