Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, December 18, 2023

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the December 18, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category National Monuments) for Monday, December 18, 2023 (Season 40, Game 71):

Designated in 2016, a New York City monument named for this place of business includes nearby Christopher Park

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Gary Hollis, a chemistry professor from Roanoke, Virginia (Friday’s total: $6,000)
Gary Hollis on Jeopardy!
Tyler Vandenberg, a Marine officer currently serving in from Stuttgart, Germany (Friday’s total: $17,600)
Tyler Vandenberg on Jeopardy!
Yungsheng Wang, a deputy public defender originally from Lafayette, Louisiana (Friday’s total: $8,000)
Yungsheng Wang on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

In today’s final game of Fall 2023’s Champions Wildcard, Tyler Vandenberg holds the lead, having doubled up in Final Jeopardy on Friday. However, his lead is absolutely not insurmountable. If Yungsheng leads Tyler by more than $4,800 going into Final (or Gary leads Tyler by more than $5,800), someone other than Tyler will have the advantage going into the final clue today. And Yungsheng, despite his very strong play over the tournament, is long overdue for finding a Daily Double! The way things have gone, this is still absolutely anybody’s match!

And I do think I need to mention this, in case you’ve been living under a rock this weekend: Ken Jennings will be hosting every Season 40 episode, after Mayim Bialik’s departure was announced on Friday.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

If you’re looking for a quick rundown of what happened last week, I write a weekly recap column for Geeks Who Drink’s Questionist, released every Sunday. Yesterday’s column was titled “Long Live the Ken“. Questionist also has a newsletter that you can sign up for!

It’s a darn shame that the Breitbart crowd is already vowing not to watch over Friday’s news. (Like they were watching the show anyway.) They could have learned something today!

On June 28, 1969, a police raid at 53 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, the location of the Stonewall Inn, an LGBTQ establishment, was the impetus for a massive resistance by New York’s LGBTQ+ community. For years, the police in New York had routinely harassed the LGBTQ+ community, and the Stonewall raid was the last straw. Led by drag queen Marsha P. Johnson, the community fought back, and the raid led to lasting political action in the American LGBTQ rights movement. Pride celebrations throughout the United States and the world now often take place on or about June 28 in honor of Stonewall.

In 2016, the Stonewall National Monument became the United States’ first national monument for an LGBTQ historic site. Visitors worldwide can experience the monument virtually at Stonewall Forever.

This is going to be an incredibly easy Final Jeopardy clue for anyone in LearnedLeague, as last Wednesday, the following question was posed: “Identify the business establishment located at 53 Christopher Street in New York’s Greenwich Village that was named a National Historic Landmark in 2020 and is at the site of a US national monument designated as such in 2016.” And, in case you’re wondering, the two contestants in today’s game who are also in LearnedLeague got the question correct in LL (the second time around for them).

Yungsheng got to the first Daily Double early in the round and nearly doubled up! A crucial moment happened midway through the round, where Gary responded without having rung in—Yungsheng picked up on it, took the clue, and found the last Daily Double immediately thereafter. Tyler 14 correct 0 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

21 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, December 18, 2023"

  1. I didn’t know where Stonewall was located. I guessed Birdland. And yeah, I’m a Charlie Parker fan.

  2. Got this one with the mention of Christopher Park

  3. The mention of Christopher park led me to stonewall inn. Still though congratulations to yungsheng winning this game today

  4. That was a good game! Yungsheng was the rightful winner, and I’m glad that Tyler got the 2nd place.

  5. Bill Vollmer | December 18, 2023 at 5:47 pm |

My thought, like Gary’s, was “What is Wall Street?” having no idea when the Bull was dedicated, and, no knowledge of where it was, except some place near the NYSE building on Wall Street.
If Tyler, or, Gary knew about the Stonewall, unlike myself, today’s answer obviously didn’t lead them to that response.

  6. The answerYungsheng gave “chicken dance”, I thought should have been deemed incorrect because the dance was the “funky chicken”.

    • No, the clue specifically said “not to be confused with the Funky Chicken”, therefore, it is definitely not the Funky Chicken.

      • Bill Vollmer | December 19, 2023 at 6:18 pm |

Didn’t the answer say something about it being a dance done at weddings?
Wouldn’t that, besides the words “NOT to be confused with the Funky Chicken eliminate the Funky Chicken, I don’t recall that being a wedding dance.

  7. PBS ran an extensive Stonewall documentary (may have been a re-run?) this summer. Gotta love how animated Youngsheng was! Though he had to know he was gonna win, he seemed to have a hard time getting his head around it! And “scared money don’t make money” has to be the best bet preamble in a long time.

  8. As per Andy’s comments, I expected to see at least two correct responses. How could one get a very similarly worded question correct on LearnedLeague, and be wrong on Jeopardy!? I’m guessing in-studio pressures might have been a factor.

    BTW…only 2 Triple Stumpers…very impressive…haven’t seen a TS that low in a long time.

    • The fact that this episode was taped in November and the LearnedLeague question was last week, mostly.

      • When I read your original notes on Monday, my personal thinking was that the taping would have occurred earlier than these same facts came up in LearnedLeague] but I thought you were describing the opposite order.

When I just reread it, I realized that the main part of what you said was referring to Jeopardy! viewers, not players. On this second (more attentive) reading, your last sentence clearly noted that this question’s occurrence in LearnedLeague was the second time around for these “current” Jeopardy! players.

I imagine Michael+R had understood your description as I first had.

  9. For those not familiar with the Stonewall Inn and Christoper Park:
    – it’s easy to get to; take the 1 train to Christopher St
    – the Stonewall Inn still exists in its current iteration and is very welcoming
    – The monument includes 4 figures sculpted/cast by George Segal (not the actor), 1924-2000. His works include the Holocaust memorial in San Francisco (California Palace of the Legion of Honor) and figures which are part of the FDR memorial in Wash DC.

    • Thank you very much for sharing that, Tim!

    • For the West Coast dwellers: a copy of the 4 figures is installed at Stanford.

    • Tim, thanks for the information. I think of National Monuments mostly as pre-existing “things” like Muir Woods and Bear Ears that have been given National Monument status and did not realize that a sculpture had been added to the iconic Stonewall Inn and Christoper Park site (though I do realize that they are all the National Monument, not just the statues).

  10. Missed this badly, but I also learned something extremely important today. I know there’s probably going to be people who will just scream “JeoPArDy is WoKE!!!!” but as has been said many times in the past, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. And I think this is something especially important for us to learn from.

On a more lighthearted note… Yungsheng is honestly one of my favorite champions ever. His energy and enthusiasm is absolutely infectious and always leaves me with a wide grin on my face (at a time when I really need that energy!) Today’s Double Jeopardy! round and him making $17K from his only DDs in the entire tournament was an absolute treat to watch. I can’t wait to see him play again in the ToC!

    • I wish you’d posted that first paragraph two hours before you did—then the half-dozen homophobic trolls who gave the comments section a visit would have seen it.

  11. I’m really aggravated, once again, with seeing only half the program- or sometimes none at all- because an ad for some spurious product needs to make more money for the television people. I think Jeopardy has earned the right to be seen as a whole program rather than randomly chopped up.

    • Have you checked out Andy’s link (at the top) about how to legally stream Jeopardy!? I have found that when I stream NBC shows on Peacock or ABC shows on Hulu (both with ads) the commercials are not the same as had aired from the local station for that episode, presumably because the streaming is provided nationally and the ad-buying is via a separate method. So if you are able to stream recent episodes of Jeopardy! that had originally been overlaid with commercials, streaming them seems likely to only show ads at the appropriate points for the appropriate amount of time. Good Luck!

For some unknown reason the latter part Dec: 18th was cut off. We were so disappointed. Now I’ve read about the result but would have loved to have seen it. All 3 played so very well.
