Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, December 19, 2023

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the December 19, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Inventions) for Tuesday, December 19, 2023 (Season 40, Game 72):

Invented in 1816, it takes its name from Greek for “chest” & “observe”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Mike Elliott, a meat cutter originally from Derry, New Hampshire
Mike Elliott on Jeopardy!
Eva Thomas, an attorney from Brooklyn, New York
Eva Thomas on Jeopardy!
Jason Carpenter, a stand-up comic from Santa Rosa Valley, California
Jason Carpenter on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After 71 episodes, the WGA strike replacement programming is over, and we’re now onto the episodes that we would have loved to see starting September 11 (you know, had the AMPTP not tried to starve out the writers).

Our first Season 39 Second Chance returnees are Mike Elliott, Eva Thomas, and Jason Carpenter; of these three, I think Mike is probably the most well-known, as he put up a near-record $26,800 going into Final Jeopardy (yet was still trailing Cris Pannullo) in one of the best regular season games of all time.

Not that I at all think this will help, but I do think it needs to be said anyway, after a rash of homophobic trolls came through the comment section last night: there are humans who have to read what you say.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Not being comfortable putting his ear directly on a woman’s chest to listen to her heart, René Laennec of Paris’s Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital realized that a rolled piece of paper, placed between the chest and his ear, could amplify the sounds without requiring physical contact. Thus, in 1816, the first stethoscope (from “stetho”, chest, and “scope”, observe). The modern stethoscope design, with a flexible tube, was perfected in the early 1850s by George Philip Cammann.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • There is still zero known instances of all three players betting $0 in Final Jeopardy.
  • I think I’ll get used to the new opening; it feels quicker to me, so I actually think it might mean that we see an extra clue or two throughout the season.
  • Despite what the large number of spamvertisers might glean from one of the national advertisements from a certain app in tonight’s game, The Jeopardy! Fan still has zero interest whatsoever in partnering with any gambling-related apps or websites.
  • Today’s box score: December 19, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Jason $12,000 Eva $5,800 Mike $2,799)

Jason: Limit your bet to $399 and take your win. (Actual bet: $0)

Eva: Limit your bet to $201 and take second place. (Actual bet: $0)

Mike: Bet whatever you like. (Actual bet: $45)

13 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, December 19, 2023"

  1. What is the stethoscope? I found this one fairly straightforward.

  2. I couldn’t think of anything other than a stethoscope. I didn’t feel confident with this category, so I didn’t bet a lot of money. Lol

  3. This is pretty straightforward if you ask me. I mean every time I go to my doctor’s office he uses a stethoscope to listen to my heartbeart. Still I would say this is a good final.

  4. As a fellow New Hampshirite, this result seriously hurt to see. I have massive respect for Mike for taking the big risk that he absolutely needed to… but still, ouch. 🙁

    • Robert J. Fawkes | December 19, 2023 at 6:22 pm |

I can agree with you on the respect part for taking the big swing but I seriously disagree with you that “He absolutely needed to.” At the time of the big wager, Mike was only $200 off the lead with 15 clues still remaining. There was absolutely no need to go all in. He could easily have risked much less and assured himself that he would still be in contention at the end. I don’t see why you say, “he absolutely needed to.” Please explain your reasoning for this statement.

      • A correct response pretty much ends the game then and there if he goes all in. In those situations, it’s better to pin your hopes on a Daily Double than Final Jeopardy, as Daily Doubles have a higher get rate overall.

        • Robert J. Fawkes | December 19, 2023 at 10:10 pm |

I respectfully disagree due to the fact that there were 15 clues remaining including another Daily Double. There is no way that a correct answer in that situation would “pretty much end the game,” not with that last DD just waiting for anyone to find. My disagreement isn’t with that, anyway. but rather with the claim that “he absolutely needed to.” He, in no way, needed to go all in there, not with 15 clues including a DD remaining. That’s my opinion, anyway, and I stand by that. Where is the “absolute need” for that when there is so much game left to be played? Neither of you has made a valid argument for “absolutely needed to.”

    • On the other hand, he absolutely needed to bet the maximum of $2000 on the final Daily Double. It would still have been a long shot, but he would have been $2800 away from being in contention going into Final Jeopardy, with $3600 still on the board.

I do wish they would just let everyone participate in FJ.

      • Robert J. Fawkes | December 20, 2023 at 1:03 am |

Yes, Eric, that is the one that he absolutely needed to bet the maximum. If MasterDoge had been referring to that one, I would have wholeheartedly agreed. The first one, not so much.

I know very little Greek, but the keywords “chest” and “observe” led me straight to the correct response; “What is a stethoscope?”
Seeing the new opening, including a glimpse of every answer and question quiz fan’s favorite announcer, made think that the material in today’s game would be crafted by the regular Jeopardy staff. Glad to see I was right.

Christian okoye of the kc chiefs was known as the Nigerian nightmare not Hakeem the dream of nba fame

    • Both of the following can be—and are, in this case—true:
      – Someone can have more than one nickname;
      – The same nickname can be used for more than one athlete.

Additionally, posting the same comment multiple times will result in your being banned from the comments for spam.

  7. Quite the game we had tonight! Bravo to all 3 players on their return to the Alex Trebek Stage for Second Chance. We’ll see what happens tomorrow night.

    P.S. – I was clueless on FJ.
