Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Welcome back to another week of Champions Wildcard on Jeopardy. We’re almost through the strike replacement programming, and we’re just 11 episodes away now from the intended “postseason play” that we were supposed to see starting back in September. Today’s game features Julia Markham Cameron, Finn Corrigan, and Kristen Thomas-McGill. My notes from their initial games reminded me that Julia was a very expressive champion in her initial games and could become a new fan favorite.
I now have a bunch of weekend content here at The Jeopardy! Fan: both a Saturday “weekly thoughts” editorial and a Sunday “viewer mailbag” column!
Additionally, if you’re looking for a quick rundown of what happened last week, I write a weekly recap column for Geeks Who Drink’s Questionist, released every Sunday. Yesterday’s column was titled “Echoes Of Giant Killings”. Questionist also has a newsletter that you can sign up for!

Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind, her only novel, which spawned one of the highest-grossing films of all time three years later, “was both beloved and condemned”. As the Atlanta History Center says, “Despite its popularity, the depictions of enslavement, the Civil War, the American South, and historic Atlanta are not accurate. Both the book and the movie depict a rosy myth of the Old South, casting the institution of slavery in a benevolent light.”
This should be a straightforward Final Jeopardy for any contestant or home viewer familiar with publication dates and settings of important American novels.

Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: Children’s Literature; British Bands; I Think We Left Someone Out; A Green Thumb; Give The “Devil”; His ‘Do)
While Kristen got the opening Daily Double incorrect, she battled back immediately to return to a tie with Finn by the opening break! After the interviews, Kristen struggled a bit, while Julia found buzzer timing to end the round just $600 behind Finn.
Statistics at the first break (15 clues):
Kristen 6 correct 2 incorrect
Finn 3 correct 0 incorrect
Julia 2 correct 1 incorrect
Today’s interviews:
Kristen completely glossed over the re-Call until a producer texted her.
Finn got re-Called just after a vacation.
Julia finished her story from her last appearance: she crowdsurfed at a Queens of the Stone Age concert.
Statistics after the Jeopardy round:
Finn 7 correct 0 incorrect
Julia 11 correct 2 incorrect
Kristen 7 correct 3 incorrect
Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:
Finn $3,600
Julia $3,000
Kristen $1,800
Double Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: Math; Words In U.S. Capitals; Movie Directors; Massage In A Bottle; A Bird In The Hand; 2 In The Bush)
Kristen got to both Daily Doubles in this round; unfortunately, she went 1-for-2 on them. This left her in third place going into Final. Meanwhile, a stronger-than-I-think-she-expected performance from Julia in the math category was enough to give her the lead going into Final!
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Julia 19 correct 2 incorrect
Finn 14 correct 1 incorrect
Kristen 16 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).
Scores going into Final:
Julia $12,600
Finn $10,400
Kristen $8,600
Kristen and Julia got Final correct—Julia, while she didn’t cover, is now a semi-finalist!
Tonight’s results:
Kristen $8,600 + $8,600 = $17,200 (What is Gone with the Wind?)
Finn $10,400 – $1,800 = $8,600 (What hi Mom + Dad)
Julia $12,600 + $7,000 = $19,600 (What is Gone With the Wind?) (Semi-Finalist)

Andy’s Thoughts:
- As you can tell by my extra words in this section and the wagering section, today was a very interesting game.
- Julia was just as much the same expressive self as she was the last time she was on. I really enjoy that sort of gameplay.
- I know that’s technically up to the player to realize that they are able to bet up to $2,000 on a Daily Double in Double Jeopardy, but it really does help the flow of the game when the host reminds them at the time, and I’m disappointed that Ken didn’t do this today. Being that I have cited this specific thing as a reason why Ken was a better host than Mayim, I do think that Ken’s habits are regressing here.
- A reminder that per the leading article rules the show goes by, where leading articles such as “the” and “a” are generally ignored, “a gust”, while it can be homophone with “august”, would fall under the “leading article rule”. (This pertains to WORDS IN U.S. CAPITALS $800). That said, I also would have agreed with the judges had they ruled the opposite way, thinking that “a gust” causes enough confusion with “august” to render the response incorrect—it’s one of those judgement calls that some fans are going to agree with and some fans aren’t. Not everything is cut-and-dried.
- Today’s box score: December 4, 2023 Box Score.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Julia $12,600 Finn $10,400 Kristen $8,600)
Julia: Standard cover bet over Finn is $8,201. Considering that Finn is in Stratton’s Dilemma and thus has occasion to bet everything, you really should do this. (Actual bet: $7,000)
Finn: You’re in Stratton’s dilemma; you can’t both cover Kristen and stay ahead of Julia if the two of you both miss Final Jeopardy. I think your two options here are “between $2,401 and $5,998” (tending towards the smaller end) if you’re not covering Kristen, or all in. ($2,401 at least covers Kristen’s small range.) (Actual bet: $1,800)
Kristen: You have two options here: if you think Finn is going to bet small, go all in. If you think Finn is going to bet big, bet between $3,601 and $4,199 (to defend against a lot of Finn’s smaller range.) (Actual bet: $8,600)

Not quite the abundance of hints as Friday’s FJ!, but it still seems like a softball.
Unfortunately, I forgot to set my DVR for today’s game, so I’m reading what Andy has posted early. The keywords in the answer, Atlanta, “beloved and condemned,” gave me “What is ‘Gone With the Wind
Same here and plus I figured the novel was probably only a few years before the movie that came out in 1939. 🙂
As an added note, she anonymously funded numerous scholarships for young African-Americans to attend medical school.
This book is similar to the movie Gone with the Wind.. Still though I would love to see the dvd version of it later on. It made me want to read the book again.
Atlanta + 1936 = Gone With The Wind”.
As far as I understand what has happened, Finn expected a triple-stumper – not an unreasonable choice, I think, given the scores – and bet small (1800 = 10400-8600, expecting Julia to cover). Seeing a very easy clue, he likely saw no point writing down the correct response, as someone else would win anyway.
I refuse to believe that he could not figure it out.
I doubt any player would forgo giving a response that they know is correct when there’s even the slightest possibility that it could affect the outcome of the game. We’ve seen great players have some surprising misses before. It seems more likely this was a case of that.
Kristen actually got the second daily double.
I’m sorry, where does it say anything different?
Disregard
What a great game tonight! 3 awesome contestants and 3 great scores going to FJ made for a very exciting outcome. And heck, I somehow even knew FJ. LOL
Hopefully when I go and see my 3 tapings tomorrow (12/05/23), I will see 3 games just like this one. I wonder what I will be seeing? ToC? Regular play? Should be interesting. Time to go to bed because Jeopardy is calling!
