Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 19th Century America) for Wednesday, January 17, 2024 (Season 40, Game 93):
An 1884 article calls this newly completed structure “the highest work of man” & disagrees with those who call it “a great chimney”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Patti Palmer, a retired teacher & bookseller from Tulsa, Oklahoma![]() |
Juveria Zaheer, a psychiatrist from Whitby, Ontario, Canada![]() |
Devin Lohman, an architectural designer & Masters student from Peachtree City, Georgia![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
After her triumphant performance in the first Season 39 Second Chance competition, Juveria Zaheer returns to the Alex Trebek Stage in Champions Wildcard. Today she faces off against Devin Lohman, who won just $1,200 in his single win in Season 39, and Patti Palmer, who won a single game before losing to ToCer Matthew Marcus. With Juveria’s performance having aired shortly before the taping of these games, I could absolutely see her opposition being intimidated by that. If not, though, I would say that absolutely anything can happen.
Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Completed in December 1884 and 555 feet high, the Washington Monument, was literally “the highest work of man”—its height surpassed the then-world’s tallest building, the Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, by 43 feet (as per the 1884 article). Per that same article, which was republished in newspapers throughout America in late 1884 and early 1885, “I do not agree with those who say it is nothing but a giant chimney. It is a work of massive, symmetrical, and wonderful immensity; and no man can view it without being filled with great thoughts of man and nature in their infinite possibilities.” The structure was overtaken in height by the Eiffel Tower in 1889.

Everyone except for Juveria herself—even Ken—were surprised by what happened on the 15th clue when she found the first Daily Double: she went all in! It was a good choice as her correct response broke the game wide open! She found the last one late in the round and bet much, much less. Needless to say, the score was a dominent runaway for everyone’s favourite Canadian psychiatrist (Canadian spelling of “favourite” used deliberately.)

I got this, mainly because of the date.
Initially I thought Statue of Liberty (the date is really close), but fortunately ‘structure’ and looks like a chimney quickly diverted me to the Washington Monument.
I also thought Statue of Liberty, thinking that it might have been finished a couple of years ahead of schedule. Those were the days.
Structure and looks like a chimney sent me straight to the Washington Monument. I would not have been able to give the year myself, but would have guessed something about like that, so it did not turn me off my first choice.
Having visited the Washington monument in the past i got this one because of the date in the clue itself. Juveria is very dominant today.
One might think that Patti had neglected to take the category of ’19th Century America’ into consideration, but if a likely structure did not come to her fast enough, she may have thought the publication making those statements could have been an American newspaper writing about the Eiffel Tower.
That said, I still was surprised that it was not a Triple Get (or at least 2 out of 3).
I got this Final Jeopardy! Thing of it is, I have no idea HOW i got it, The keywords in the answer meant nothing to me. Just shrugged and said “what is the Washington Monument?” I was so flabergasted when they revealed Juveria’s response, and, Ken announced it was right!
Guess it just might be another example of Canadians knowing more about US, than we Americans know about our own country (and, certainly more than most Americans know about either of our North American neighbors.)
Living fewer than 20 miles from the Washington Monument made this an easy get for me. I can see whereas one might go for the Eiffel Tower given the timeframe. Still, this was too easy for me given my proximity to it.
Yeah, but the category was 19th Century America, which would eliminate anything outside of the U.S.
As I already commented 2 days ago “One might think that Patti had neglected to take the category of ’19th Century America’ into consideration, but if a likely structure did not come to her [Patti] fast enough, she may have thought the publication making those statements could have been an American newspaper writing about the Eiffel Tower”.
It appears that Ken knew what amount Juveria had wagered in Final Jeopardy before it screened; confirming my suspicion that the host is aware of bets and responses just before the reveals.
For what it’s worth: this isn’t new information. It has been known for years, and the show has explicitly said this (especially on Inside Jeopardy), that after the wagers are locked in, the host is given a card with everyone’s wagers on them, as well as their final scores “if correct” and “if incorrect”, so that the host can quickly inform the viewers as to what is happening.
I went with The Empire State Building for FJ. Oopsie! Congrats to Juveria on a hugely dominant win. I have Martha winning tomorrow.
