Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 1980s Movie Characters) for Wednesday, January 24, 2024 (Season 40, Game 98):

Oliver Stone, screenwriter of this 1983 movie, named its main character to honor the Super Bowl-winning QB from 1982

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Kelly Barry, a marketing communications manager from Seattle, Washington
Kelly Barry on Jeopardy!
Lloyd Sy, a professor of American literature originally from Rockford, Illinois
Lloyd Sy on Jeopardy!
Dillon Hupp, an associate director of development from Syracuse, New York
Dillon Hupp on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today is Quarterfinal #7 of Group 1 of Winter 2024’s Champions Wildcard competition, as Dillon Hupp, Lloyd Sy, and Kelly Barry look to get one win closer to the Tournament of Champions. This one is a matchup of giant-killers: Lloyd Sy ended Ray Lalonde’s streak, while Kelly Barry ended Stephen Webb’s. In my preview, I said that I thought Lloyd was the favorite in this one, as Lloyd does have strong stats to go with his win over Ray.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Oliver Stone, writer of the 1983 movie Scarface, named the film’s main character Tony Montana in honor of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana, who had recently won his first Super Bowl.

I like this Final Jeopardy clue as it requires a little bit of knowledge of the film—trying to get at this from the Super Bowl angle alone will be very difficult.

An early Daily Double miss didn’t faze Lloyd at all; he got the next five clues after that to retake the lead! Coming out of the break, he picked up six more correct to lead after 30. Kelly had a good segment as well, picking up 5 correct to sit just behind Lloyd.

Dillon 2 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Double Jeopardy! Round:

Lloyd made a very conservative bet on the first Daily Double, and Dillon then made a more aggressive one on the last one to pull him back into the lead! However, Lloyd’s buzzer skill brought him back into a commanding position. The last dozen clues left us wondering if Lloyd would have a runaway, and Dillon got the last two clues correct to ensure that Lloyd did not!

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Lloyd 30 correct 2 incorrect
Dillon 13 correct 2 incorrect
Kelly 8 correct 3 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Lloyd $25,200
Dillon $13,000
Kelly $2,400

Final Jeopardy was a Triple Stumper, and that means Lloyd advances to the semifinals!

Tonight’s results:

Kelly $2,400 – $600 = $1,800 (What is ??)
Dillon $13,000 – $13,000 = $0 (What is Platoon?)
Lloyd $25,200 – $801 = $24,399 (What is Platoon?) (Semi-Finalist)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Two Newfoundland-related corrections today for Ken: 1) It’s not the first place on the continent for the show to air; 2) Once again, it rhymes with Disneyland, not Maryland.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

  1. I knew Joe Montana – but couldn’t get to Scarface in time.

    • Same here. Guess it would have helped had I see the movie.

I got tripped up by something Andy has commented on in the past about Oscar clues. I knew the 49ers had won the Super Bowl for the 1981 season that was played in early 1982, but I was trying to remember who won the Super Bowl played in early 1983 to crown the champion of the 1982 season (Washington).

  2. Simple for a Cincinnati Bengals fan.

  3. Scarface was also in the Batman animated series but when I thought of jor Montana yup it pointed me to Scarface

  4. The only way I got to the correct answer was through the lyrics of “Jack Sparrow” by The Lonely Island – my entire familiarity with Scarface.

  5. Bill Vollmer | January 24, 2024 at 5:57 pm |

Unforunately, not having seen Scarface (and, even if I had, don’t know if I’d associate it with Oliver Stone,) and, not knowing that Joe Montana was the Super Bowl MVP in 1982, I was nowhere with this Daily Double.
Even our instructor at Yale, who was from Rockford,IL, was wrong on this one. But survived to make it to the semi-finals. Always like to see an Illinoisian do well. (Can’t use ther term Illini, that’s the name for the athletic teams at the university of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.)

  6. Robert J. Fawkes | January 24, 2024 at 6:01 pm |

Contrary to Andy’s comment, I started at the Super Bowl with Joe Montana and got Tony Montana from that which, of course, led to “Scarface.” I guess there are different ways to get to the same place. Could we say, “All roads lead to Tony Romo”? JK

  7. Horribly I couldn’t even get to the winner of the 1982 Super Bowl, which is sad. I was 13 at the time and clearly knew he beat the Bengals that year. 🙁 But having never seen Scarface, I probably wouldn’t have gotten there anyway.

Retro congrats to Lloyd. He was awesome tonight. I sure hope that he and Juveria aren’t in the same Semifinal, as that would be kind of tragic. I had predicted Lloyd in this one. In tomorrow’s game I have Connor Sears winning.

  8. Lloyd’s buzzer success was 81%. That’s just astounding.
