Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Names in History) for Tuesday, January 30, 2024 (Season 40, Game 102):
The scientific name of Jamaica’s ackee fruit honors this captain who brought it to England in 1793
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Robbi Ramirez, a writer from Orlando, Florida![]() |
Alec Chao, a management & program analyst originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida![]() |
Juveria Zaheer, a psychiatrist from Whitby, Ontario, Canada![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Today’s second semifinal features Juveria Zaheer, Alec Chao, and Robbi Ramirez. After seeing what happened yesterday with Lloyd Sy, I think a lot of people would be well-advised to take Alec and Robbi’s chances seriously today. Yes, Juveria is a very strong player, but the history of Jeopardy! is littered with players who dominated a quarterfinal and then had a bad semifinal. (Though, I, too, would be disappointed if Juveria failed to take victory today.)

Captain Bligh, while more famous for commanding the HMS Bounty when the crew mutinied in 1789, also brought the ackee fruit to England in the early 1790s. The fruit has become Jamaica’s national fruit, and is often paired with saltfish in Jamaica’s national dish.
In order to get this one, you definitely need to go farther than “What captains might be associated with Jamaica”, because stopping there will likely lead to a response of Captain Morgan, and instead go to “What captains might be associated with exotic fruit”, which might get you to Bligh. (The HMS Bounty‘s intended mission was to take breadfruit plants from the South Pacific and transport them to the Caribbean.)

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I think Juveria bet $1 too much in Final. Had Alec made his maximum small bet, he would have finished at $11,200.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Robbi $22,600 Juveria $18,200 Alec $10,000)
Juveria: Standard cover bet over Alec is $1,801. (Actual bet: $7,000)
Alec: You can’t both win a Double Stumper with Robbi and pass Juveria if she makes a small bet. Honestly, I think Juveria is more likely to be conservative here, so go all in. If you think Juveria is going to make a large bet, though, then limit your bet to $1,200 or less and play for a Triple Stumper. (Actual bet: $10,000)
Robbi: Standard cover bet over Juveria is $13,801. (Actual bet: $14,000)

The hms bounty ship was probably the biggest key here since Bligh got that Jamaican fruit. After analyzing the history about Bligh it just came to me.
The Bounty went nowhere near Jamaica.
minor detail 🙂
Louis’ comments frequently sound like Andy’s explanation (or maybe Ken’s) provides them their “clues” rather than the actual FJ/clue providing the only information. Though perhaps Louis just doesn’t provide a good explanation of the actual convoluted line of reasoning taken before arriving at what they call the ‘key’ and then think further before arriving at the correct fact.
On the other hand, it wouldn’t be the first time some erroneous “knowledge” had led to a correct response, occasionally even by a contestant.
Go Juveria!
It was straightforward to realize that 1793 was too late even for Cook, but, indeed, I went with “Morgan”, hoping that Henry had relatives with nautical skills who had kept his name.
Quite a wordy guest category, and no unrevealed clues! Hurrah!
So cool you had a whole category for Van Halen!!
I didn’t come up with anything. If there had been anything pointing to the Mutiny on the Bounty, I still wouldn’t have gotten it in 30 seconds. Though I know about the event, Bligh’s name is buried too far in my head. I ruled out Cook since he was dead by then, and I think Robbi put him down since that was the only name in his head, too. He almost became a giant slayer, which is better than anyone who’s faced Juveria so far.
Happy Juveria survived (word choice 100% intentional) because I’ve been rooting for her. I’m hoping her brother Omar gets a second chance too just so we can see if this kind of success runs in the family. Omar and two friends from his cast (including the winner, who took Omar out) did an AMA on Reddit last week, BTW, and Juveria got brought up several times. They’re reveling in her success.
This is an area of history where I’m very uninformed. Neither of Andy’s threads would’ve helped me, even if they had come to me. I only know of Bligh from Mutiny on the Bounty, and, of that the barest of details, so obviously I didn’t know what the Bounty’s cargo was. Not that it would have helped much here.
I am guessing that when in the Caribbean, Bligh was at that time captaining some ship other than the Bounty.
I always think of Captain Morgan as more of a fictional/advertising gimmick so I went with Captain Bligh as my go to Captain for trivia.
I went with who Robbi did and that was Captain Cook. 🙁
Retro congrats to Juveria! That was one crazy game tonight. Robbi once again came from nowhere in Double Jeopardy and wow, he almost won. Alec played a great game as well.
Both semifinal games have had all of the contestants at 5 digits entering FJ. All I can say about that is that is very impressive.
I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s Humpday version of Jeopardy and have Michael Menkhus winning, which means nothing in these ultra-competitive games. 🙂
